Started out in May, never drove semi prior. Work for Swift, flatbed division.

First accident was on I-10. Had to make a right turn onto this small road, turned out I had to take the next right up ahead instead about 3 seconds down. Had to back up and get back on the interstate since there was a median on my side and that right turn wasn't possible to take in a truck anyways. Looked behind me, a car went around me. Saw no one else, backed up 2 or so feet and boom...kissed this lady's bumper. She was right up on my ### the entire time. I got let off the hook.

Today over a month and some change later, got my second backing accident at a truck stop. I was backing in next to this guy and he was looking out his window and motioning for me with his hand in a come here motion with all his fingers. Me being dumb for trusting him, thought he meant for me to keep backing up that I had enough clearance. I was wrong...ended up cracking his fender and breaking the plastic chrome thing around his headlights. He got out mad yelling at me. I was at the point just where I thought I was going to pivot just enough to start going by him. I told him man WHAT are you smoking?!? You were motioning for me to keep backing, I cant believe this. Witnesses all around said the same thing about how he was signaling for me to keep backing up and not honking instead. One of the witnesses works for my company which I gave the info to. The guy was mad saying, "you think I wanted him to hit my truck? I was trying to show him to stop." Texted the photos and this witness's truck number to back me up tomorrow.

Did not get out and look. People have guided me at truck stops all the time, I thought this guy was doing the same. First accident was july 15th. Today is second. Time to apply everywhere, I'm 99% sure I'm getting let go tomorrow.

He later apologized. I think he was sincere, there was just a severe miscommunication. Anyone would of thought the same thing if the other person motioned like that with their hand. There was absolutely NO mistake that this guy was motioning for me go keep on backing.

I wouldn't get too stressed, plenty of places to work, and swift is kind of used to these things anyway.

If they call you in to the office just stay calm and explain what happened. Let them know you learned that people will shove thier head right up your butt at any time on the road, and you can never trust anyone else when you are backing. No random people that "come to help", no driver in his seat that waves or nods at you. It's you and your "Spidey sense" from now on.

Sorry you're going through this. The best I can tell you to do in the future is to obsessively get out and look. No matter how much of a hurry you're in, no matter how much it makes you look like a rookie, no matter how much it inconveniences the super truckers trying to get back on the road to make .43 cpm. Assess the situation for YOURSELF, talk to your spotter about hand signals, and...look like the rookie you are. It's OKAY. Better to be a little embarrassed than to hit something.

Guy above me really summed it up. Absolutely never count on someone and always get out. You will overcome this if you follow the most basic advice. You simply should NEVER have a backing incident. Its excusable since youre new but by the time you have been driving a year theres no excuses

I trust people to within reason but I get out a lot anyway. I will however guide guys back saying “I can’t GUIDE YOU, but if I’m yelling and waving my arms you need to STOP”

Absolutely. That's why diligence is important. An ounce of prevention, and all that.

The most I ever agree to do is tell them when it's okay to move, and when they need to stop. You need to decide for yourself how to turn the wheel. One hand gives the backing motion, a fist means stop, two hands overhead means "stop immediately, and get out here and see what you almost did." Lol
