I gotta agree with Old Iron here, you seem to be having troubles that no one else has. You get two wraps around that spool there’s no way you’re pulling it off. You’ll pull the winch off or strap in two before you’ll pull it off the spool. Comparing this two not securing at all is nonsense.

To your other post I can show you many things we all do that’s contrary to the “manufacturer recommendations” look st the proper way to use a hook. I still want to see the actual ticket for doing this.

So why would a manufacturer want 12" of strap to pass completely through a winch?

What happens if I just ignore that... It's my responsibility is something goes wrong right? And it usually won't be just me that has to deal with any problems from whatever comes loose. Other people driving next to me might be involved in it and not by a choice of thier own right?

It isn't just "you" you need to worry about. It's not even worth considering that it might be a bad idea?

Manufacturer recommends rechecking your lug nuts after so many miles do you do that? Do you obey the speed limit to the letter if the law all the time? Firehose manufactures don’t recommend their hose be used as a softener but we do it is that ok? A hook is designed to support the load at the bottom of the hook which it doesn’t hooked to the beam of a lowboy is that ok? You’re the only one I’ve heard having things come loose, is this single strap the only thing securing your load? That’s seems unsafe.

 

Ok, let's talk about hooks... It's a straight forward device right? What if I don't want to hook it on to something, maybe I just want to put the hook tip on something instead of "seating" it in something.

Well, just using the tip adds some pressure. I could probably just do that, even though it wasn't designed to be used that way. As long as I drive like a geriatric there won't be any problems. Could probably do that for 20 years and squeak by.

Thy putting just the hook tip on a lowboy frame and think about that. That's what I'm talking about with the winch and strap

 

You’re comparing apples and oranges, hooking just the tip of a hook vs wrapping the strap around a winch several times are not analogous. Why can a wire rope only be held on a drum by friction?
