Hey drivers.
So I have a question. I’ve had a CDL since 2011 but i haven’t used it to drive commercial since 2016. Recently Ive considered leaving my Class C job for a Class A position. My medical card expired in 2016. I recently got another medical evaluation done and received my new card however it’s come to my attention from another driver that I would have to re take all tests driving included and start from scratch because I let my first med card expire. Is this true? I can’t seem to find a straight source online and before I invest time in paperwork and a two hour DMV trip I’d like to know. Thank you for your help!

DMV should have sent you a notice that they downgraded your license.
Go online or go down to DMV and check.snowmantrucking101 and BoxxTrucker Thank this. -
so yeah, written tests, driving test all over again. (which might mean going to a driving school so that you can have a truck for the road/skills tests, as well as a refresher for your benefit)
your very best bet, is to simply go in person or go online to YOUR DMV for the factual facts.BoxxTrucker Thanks this. -
No, but you have to take your new medical card to the dmv and register it. You can do it online, but This year is the first time I tried that and as suspected I wound up with my cdl suspended till I took it down and registered it.
There may be some kind of time limit, but I don't know what it would be, my daughter hasn't used her cdl in years, so she just gets a physical every few years.BoxxTrucker Thanks this. -

Mine was out for 2 months last year, then when I got it I tried the online registering thing, it was another month before i checked and just went in and registered it, no problem at all.
Hell I let my DL expire last year, first time since 76, and it was 3 months, I went in and they said I had a year to renew it before i would have to retest.BoxxTrucker Thanks this. -

You can test without school, we do it all the time. I have heard that that may change next year though.
