    Hey drivers.

So I have a question. I’ve had a CDL since 2011 but i haven’t used it to drive commercial since 2016. Recently Ive considered leaving my Class C job for a Class A position. My medical card expired in 2016. I recently got another medical evaluation done and received my new card however it’s come to my attention from another driver that I would have to re take all tests driving included and start from scratch because I let my first med card expire. Is this true? I can’t seem to find a straight source online and before I invest time in paperwork and a two hour DMV trip I’d like to know. Thank you for your help!

DMV should have sent you a notice that they downgraded your license.
Go online or go down to DMV and check.

most states down grade your CDL if the med card expired and you did not renew it in (i think) 30 days.

so yeah, written tests, driving test all over again. (which might mean going to a driving school so that you can have a truck for the road/skills tests, as well as a refresher for your benefit)

your very best bet, is to simply go in person or go online to YOUR DMV for the factual facts.

No, but you have to take your new medical card to the dmv and register it. You can do it online, but This year is the first time I tried that and as suspected I wound up with my cdl suspended till I took it down and registered it.
There may be some kind of time limit, but I don't know what it would be, my daughter hasn't used her cdl in years, so she just gets a physical every few years.

Mine was out for 2 months last year, then when I got it I tried the online registering thing, it was another month before i checked and just went in and registered it, no problem at all.

Hell I let my DL expire last year, first time since 76, and it was 3 months, I went in and they said I had a year to renew it before i would have to retest.

I’ve been without a med card for almost 3 years. I got a class c job in 2017 but prior to that I have several years of otr. I guess I’ll have to make a trip to the DMV and find out but worst case scenario would I have to pay for more trucking school or could I just rent a T/T and test

You can test without school, we do it all the time. I have heard that that may change next year though.

Thank you. Finally, if I do have to start all over can I still use the years experience I have in otr to apply for my experienced jobs after I finish or do I also lose my verifiable experience as well. This job I’m considering requires 1 year OTR within the last 5
