SWR is matching the antenna to the vehicle. You don't even need a radio to do this if you have a antenna analyzer. Once done it doesn't matter what radio you use, it won't change the SWR. (providing it is a good working radio). Something else going on here.

    handlebar Thanks this.

Well as posted in my initial msg there kaji i mention im grounded to chassi via 12ga wire..

Mike i dont own an ant analizer and well to use it once or twice every few yrs its not a worth while investment..Getting a local guy to look at it is like pulling teeth cause he does security systems as well and is hard to hook up with..

What bugs me is that my cobra and set up is the same for both radios..Hate to think my stryker is a bad radio that i just bought...My seperate swr meter shows 1.5 with my cobra set up and all i do is change the radio and up she goes..Till i open the door and the swr drops...Bugs me to that a cpl weeks ago my coax/ant everythin was checked and all good to go..

    Im baffeled...

Any suggestions on a ant analizer..

Ok i made a discovery with the help from stryker..
I took out my digital cobra and was messin around when i remembered a question stryker asked that i couldnt answer at the time...
I loaded in my cobra and forgot it had a freq on it and did a brief comparison..My cobra and stryker show totally different freq numbers for all 40 channels...Hhh so i thought for a sec and grabbed my galaxy phone and looked up the freq chart..Seems my $100 cobra is almost dead on the money and my stryker is a good bit off..
I just emailed stryker and the cb shop i bought it from with results..
Now my swr issue is maken more sence..
Hate to say it but unless i did unknowing did somethin to change the freq on the stryker im not so far impressed with this $$450 radio..
    Ill keep ya all posted..

If your Stryker has been converted, you need to turn the band switch until the frequency counter says 27.185 when you have the channel selector on channel 19. I think you have the band switch in the wrong position. I'm not familiar with Strykers, so I don't know what position that would be.

Thats a possibiility bud, this is my 1st so called big radio and i havent had time to learn all the functions..The manual for this sux ### it just tells you to have lowest swr possible but manual has no examples just what each knob and switch is..So far its my only beef with stryker..

I lub my stryker 955, but never ever seen a radio you actually needed the instructions to operate. I don't have it with me to help you, but I believe you change bands in the functions menu (or was it in one of the sliding center switches hmm?), using the channel selector to change. As Josh.c said your looking for 27.1850 for #19. If it is +/- 0.001 use the coarse clarifier knob to adjust.

Great thread Handlebar! I only wish I had read this months ago while I was looking for answers on the same subject.

I tried this and tossed the idea because I didn't see any change in SWR when I connected a short antenna below. Question I have is, without a change in SWR does that mean I already had a sufficient ground plane? And should this dipole continue to use the extra ground of vehicle or should it be insulated from ground? <--- my setup had ground wire running to the mirror mount.

    TYSVM!

These export, 10 meter radios, are not entry level radios. Sounds like you are in the wrong band. This is why the ham guys hate these radios. It is too easy for the beginner to get into the ham band where he doesn't belong. I am not familiar with Styker so i can't help you with it's functions. Sorry.

Brilliant. I know what I'll be doing this weekend. Now, as far as the bottom half, can I use my Wilson 2000 (it will have to be trimmed a bit since it will be inside the topper) along with my Stryker SR-A10 on the top? Or does the bottom portion need to be outside of the vehicle.
