It's an inherited mess that looks worse than it is. The main power leads back into the truck are attached to the front batteries. Once those are disconnected, you lift the whole mess out of the way with a bungee hooked to the mirror. If they were shortened, getting the cables out of the way to get at the batteries out of that tight case would be more difficult. Plus, there's plenty of cable when I need to cut off a rotten end and put on a new terminal.
My other truck is a 387 with the batteries in a row under the step. I thought that would be easier, but I think they get lower and harder to reach every year. Must be my imagination LOL
