According to FL dealer shop.
The megas spend MILLIONS in research for fuel economy.
I've seen a couple of England test trucks floating around the valley few years back. This was when the trailer fins were getting started.
Last month I saw their latest test trucks. HYBRID.
Don't blame the drivers because that's what they learned on.
The whole automatics and small rearend gears. Is the mega's quest for economy.
Over on one of the other posts. Drivers say their trucks pull just fine in the mountains. And some even brag of better then 7 mpg.
They all pull better then me. But I don't think I've got the best power. And I weigh more.

When Autos first started getting used by the megas, they claimed it was because they it would make it easier ti teach drivers to drive, fuel mileage was not mentioned.
As far as I know the old helmut still holds the fuel mileage record, but it was so ugly no one would drive them. loljamespmack Thanks this. -
Want a truck that pulls good, buy horsepower, enough hp will overcome any gear ratio. Want fuel mileage, keep your right foot under control.

The biggest thing is that for FLEETS .1 mpg diference across a fleet of 100 trucks can save the fleet like $25k to $30k annually... So for FLEETS gearing higher to match with whatever speed they govern the trucks at makes sense.
But for O/O gearing higher to get a few tenths better fuel mileage at a low speed but gutless doesnt make that much sense at all.Dino soar Thanks this. -

because every other time a piston comes to TDC, fuel gets burned. Fewer times = less fuel. Simple math as they sayjamespmack Thanks this. -
