Yeah unfortunately a lot of people seem to fall into the hype about more power from their CB radio.
Back in the 70s when I got into CB radio, people bought a new radio and never thought about taking it to a technician. They just worked fine the way they were. People that wanted a noise toy, would install them in the microphone, such as the D104 lollipop. It was probably easier and cheaper than opening up a radio.
I couldn’t even tell you what techs were around back in the day. I never had a problem with my radios and as long as I left my golden screwdriver out of my radios, they worked fine.

I still do that. The radio works from the factory, or it goes back for warranty. After that, if it breaks, it goes to the trash and replaced with a new one. I don't even know any techs.
Frankly, I don't care if I sound like Frank Sinatra on the radio. I'm not into Bro-Mancing anywayTimin770 and wolverine11 Thank this. -

So I am gonna revive this dead thread. I have had a cobra 29 ltd classic for A LONG time and it just recently started to have issues that turned out to be the mic. I bought an Aststic Mic and what a difference that made. I wanna say I have had it since 2003 but I may be off a little either way its old. Amazingly that was the original mic that I just got rid of!
What really blows my mind is I went to look at radios and they are dirt cheap now! im afraid to buy anything else the 29 is $119 mine was almost $199 back in 03 so there's got to be a quality difference somewhere.
Ive been told it needs a yearly tuneup is that true or is this a if it aint broke type thing? I run hard with a buddy 2 trucks and we chatter over the cb most nights so it gets heavy use. I thought hard on a Stryker but reading all this makes me wonder if its even necessary other than the cool factor.
I love their looks I really only wanted an upgrade cuz I thought my was going bad but that mic switch out seems to have been the issue. Then I saw all the flashy colors and got hookedstupid I know. Its like an old tool I don't want to get rid of now.
