As pictured here the wrist pin clip in my old piston is at 12:00 o’clock. I always put the ends at 12 or 6, never 3 or 9. There is enough movement during the power stroke to weaken the clip over time when at 3 or 9 o’clock..... results are a clip breaking and finding its way between the piston skirt and the cylinder. And if it makes it down to the pan without major damage, the wrist pin will do the damage when it finds its way out against the cylinder.
You are correct on the bearings, the upper rod bearing and the lower main bearing get the most wear do to the power stroke.
When I pull a strange engine apart and the rod bearings fall out easily, instead of need a little encouragement to come out, indicates to me that engine has spent it’s life right against the governor. Most of us cruise around 1500 to 1700 rpm not 2100 all the time every mile every day.....
