I was pretty much set on TMC for my career change from finish carpentry/cabinet installation. I thought I was in pretty good shape for a 56 year old, because I often have to slog through deep beach sand carrying table saws and miter saws, then up and down stairs all day in 105F heat index temperatures in the Florida humidity. The pay is good, but my gosh I'm ready to do something different after 25 years.

Today, I again watched the TMC physical assessment video and thought it would be a good idea to see if I could actually lift the lumber tarp up onto my shoulders. I made a mock-up of a 120 lb lumber tarp using sandbags rolled up in a poly tarp and duct taped.

Using proper lifting techniques, all I can say is Holy Crud! I think I have to leave flat-bedding, sadly, to you younger guys. Geez, they make lighter tarp systems, but I guess the flatbed Marine Corps has to do it the hard way.

Back to square one. Goodbye black and chrome Pete. :(

The majority of the time the forklift operator will put the rolled up tarp on the deck for you without you even needing to ask.

Ah, you might be better off with Melton or some other outfit anyway. Aside from the shiny black paint and some chrome, they really aren't any better than any other company.

Maybe I could start weight training...my 50 year old wife beat breast cancer, lost 50 lbs, and is now a part-time zumba and pound instructor.

    It can be done.

For real? I haven't read anything bad about them, or are you specifically referring to other flatbed companies?

For what my parents just paid for their new cabinets I'd say you're better off sticking with that than trucking.

You wouldn't believe how thin the gross profit margin is on mid-priced cabinets. I'm also a cabinet dealer, but I do the installations as well because I don't make enough money just selling them. I'll be really busy for several months, then my phone will stop ringing, and I won't earn for sometimes a couple of months.

I thought I had the google SEO figured out years ago, because I always came up one or two in search results. Now my website is buried four or five pages back. I've wasted a whole lot of money trying to find a marketing method that works, most recently, $3600 for a year's worth of promoted content on the website Houzz. $3600 and not. a. single. job out of it.

Twenty-five years of not getting ahead. You know that definition of insanity?

I called Melton. They are hiring in my area, and only require a 90 lb tarp lift. I took one of the sandbags out, and lifted that thing onto my shoulder with little trouble.

I know that insanity all right, never figured building cabinets would be that small of a profit margin though. I guess I've never been involved in woodworking much other than a few shop classes in school.
