Question about weight limit restrictions.. I have my cdl but I'm going to be running under a basic non cdl set up. Meaning for now with the current truck I have, I plan to stay under the 26k lbs set up.

Being I do have a cdl can I have a higher weight rating on my trailer but just not pull anything over 26k lbs? I'm avoiding IFTA and a few other things by staying under 26k lbs because my current truck is just a single wheel 1 ton so it's not worth dealing with IFTA, random drug tests, ect..ect if I can't haul over 26k lbs anyway..

So my question is, can I buy a trailer with say a 21k lbs gvwr and just not run higher than 26k lbs Being I do have a unrestricted cdl? License wise Im not limited to under 26001 I'm mainly self limiting due to my current truck which I plan to upgrade. Is it possible for me to get the better trailer with more cargo capacity and still run as a non cdl set up under 26k lbs?

No. Everything goes off wight ratings for what is required. Not just what type of license, but ifta, drug testing, etc. Everything.

Ahh ok so even if I bought a better trailer I'd have to get it derated anyway.

A single wheel 1 ton can't haul the weight anyways.

You need a dually, trans, and rear ends capable of what your talking.

Yea my plan was to bump up to a 550. I ended up with the truck I bought due to spur of the moment good deal and I had seen a lot of guys running non cdl set ups and figured I could just start that way.

I should have stuck to buying a 450 or 550 as I originally planned but I saw a good deal and jumped. In all honesty though I can transition this truck to my personal vehicle after I upgrade and that will give me a back up truck if I even need it so I can make it work for now and make it benefit me later.

Also on the plus side I learned a hell of a lot fixing my current truck. I had never really wrenched on diesels before so I didn't know what made them tick.

I'm now very confident I can fix whatever goes wrong just the same as if it were a gas jobber.. So the truck I bought due to it needing heads was a good buy for me because had I just bought a running truck I'd still be lost so far as fixing diesels.

There is a plate on your pickup gross combination vehicle weight if possible There should be a diagram in your glove box of that truck telling you exactly how many pounds to put into the bed etc. (Including 5th wheel etc weight)

Your trailer should have a tare weight on it and then the max weight for it and then that should be taken into considertion with whatever total weight you intend to put on her.

You might find shes a little too runt. And since you already hold a CDL A for it, the next problem is above 26001 becomes Commerical with all the things regulating everything and everyone doing it all the way down to pickups these days.

Whatever your total tare truck and trailer subtract from 26000 and there is the value of what you can put on it and go. You will find its really limiting.

Finally you want tires of a commerical nature with enough ply and gross weight capacity per tire totaling what you intend to load her to and not beyond.

The 10k lbs cargo capacity is pretty average for non CDL set ups. So far as tires all that kinda stuff yea I'm on top off all that..

With the trailer set up I'm looking at (low boy flat deck) I think I'll be fine running as a under 26k lbs to get myself started. It's one of the 2 car style goosenecks but it's the full 102" wide, with wood deck, rub rails ect. Meaning it's low enough I can load low cars but has the ability to load freight on it as well. I'm in FL so there is no way I can avoid cars as that's most likely what I will be getting out of the state with and TBH, I'm likely going to deal mostly in cars my 1st 90 days as it's a bit easier to get car loads than freight as a new MC from what I've been hearing.

I can pull local work from the auctions here if I want to, which is what I was looking to do my 1st 90 days or so and until I upgrade trucks. I'm looking to do local and short regional runs until I fully trust my truck.

Anyway this is style trailer I'm getting.. Planning on getting a 36 or 38ft weight wise I'll have about 12k capacity with one of these.

That aint bad. We see them all the time in our Adesa here in Arkansas. I was crew boss mainly with trucks once or twice a month herding a group of CDL temps.

You might like it beyond 90 days. Just secure them careful. Thats all.

Yeah, I hate staying in FL TBH, but I have quite literally at least 10 auctions with-in 50 miles of my house.. (I'm between Daytona & Orlando) Then if you get into Tampa, Jacksonville there are even more, so there is tons of car work here to stay local.. However I love getting on the road and just diving... I love the cross country stuff.

Arkansas isnt much better until you get out far enough into the hills to understand that the cars that somehow make it out there are sold as it is. Not as dot inspected vehicles... in a sense.
