I'll admit part of the problem we have with retention is the pay isn't what it should be. The base hourly wage isn't different to what other "Local" gigs pay in the area. The issue, is other local gigs pay overtime after 8 with an average shift of 10 hours, often going to 12 which averages out to a higher wage. Overtime here can be sketchy as it's based on what the local pipeline industry needs.
That said... when guys (or gals? Haven't had one yet...) come in and interview we're very up front about what the job is.
100% full touchy touchy freight. You're responsible for pulling product, packaging it, loading it, securing it, and sometimes helping unload it.
Often times the touchy touchy freight can be an epic pain in the arse to secure to the deck.
Fast paced work environment out in the hot of the summer and rainy cold of the winter.
"Face of the Company". Including the first person to be yelled at by contractors if something isn't right, even when the issue originated with the sales team.
Some jobsites suck. Turn up your "Git Gud" at driving to 100. Yes, occasionally you'll have a guy with a boom loader following you so you can have them lift the rear end of your trailer off of the ground and help you make a turn. Yes, the drive axles are full lockers for a reason.
"Ok, cool. Yeah, I don't mind any of that! Sign me up!"
Three months later...
"This is too hard, I can't handle it"
Edit in:
Oh well, it'll be a few weeks of me doing all that #### and not having a problem with it. I've got my long game on, and if I stick with it I'll be able to get a job wherever the hell I want. -

The light for optimized idle was a system to start and charge batteries, plus climate control. Poor detroit design at best. Most have been disabled by now. But it worked off a series of switches. Having a prolink and looking at switch status will tell you what one is open/closed not allowing it to idle up. There was a extra air psi switch on some to tell the ecm if the brakes were released. Equals no high idle. More common than not the mercury switch on the hood, which informed the ecm not to self start because hood is open fails. If it is still there buy pass it. The other is the TPS. While this may function just fine driving you need to see on computer if it actually shows idle position. The TPS is a multifunction switch that can also be a idle validation switch. This is from my memory and I have the books if we need to dig into this further. -
