I read his statement as a compliment to you.

Kinda. Possibly with a whole lot of teasing in it. Has to be for a good intent and nothing bad.

A little sass always is good for a trucker. Just need to get him a good trainer to learn how to better apply it. HA....

I like your picture. Do you comb your hair out like that? Or is it naturally that way? :)
    Seriously... pic is adorable.

Yeah, my hair is always like that. The face is a mudbath my wife smeared on me while I was sleeping one night. Had to change my skivvies after I walked into the bathroom and saw that face staring back at me. Needless to say, it wasn't the face I was expecting. :biggrin_2555::biggrin_2559::biggrin_2559:

Ok nightly update: the company was good enough to get us a load from Laredo to Detroit yesterday, I’ll be home in a few hours.

I drove 11 hrs today, each day it gets easier to do the full time.

Downshifting was much better...as long as HE was in the sleeping birth lol I’m fine as long as he’s not around!

That being said, I did find a way to actually learn from him that WORKED. Any time I needed to downshift, or do anything like that, well in advance I would verbally tell him in detail what I was going to do. “I’m going to use the hill of the off ramp to slow me down, once I get to the top I’m going to break down to X mph and I will downshift to X gear”

As long as I did that, he couldn’t be surprised, and he could correct it if he didn’t agree. That gave me time to do whatever he asked mentally without screwing up!

    Now, question time!

    1) why does it seem like a lot of “professional drivers” can’t drive?

    2) I had multiple professional drivers today who would not drive a consistent speed. I’m maxed out by the computer at 65, so on the open freeway I’d just put the pedal down and stay at a consistent speed. I’d get passed by a trucker, he’d blow my doors off, then ten minutes later I’d end up having to pass him. A couple minutes later he’d pass me. I didn’t let it get to me, I’d just get around him if I needed, but how are you supposed to handle situations like that?

    3) along those same lines, if I’m passing another truck (or vice Versa) and it’s a very very slow pass, should the truck being passed stay a consistent speed, or take their foot off the gas for a moment so they can be passed safely? That’s more me trying to be courteous and not tick off other drivers lol

I'm toooooo tired to answer these q's... but I think in your OWN mind, you know the answers. Pretty sure ya got this, man. Wish I were more copacetic tonight... worked in the yard and did electrical wiring work for my lawyer .. barter system still exists. I'm sure some of the 'hands will answer these for you.. OR YOU JUST answer. I think you know.

    @88 Alpha .. you up? I'm fading.

    First things first.

Glad you are on your way home so you can be with your family in a crisis. That's important and I know it all too well.

Congratulations for being able to begin to get a handle on your shifting. It may actually be beneficial for you to do the same thing once you get you own truck. There will be times when you thin you have a million things to do all at once. Slow down and tell yourself out loud what you are going to do. Some people learn when they see things done, some people learn when they hear things, even if they tell it to themselves.

NOW.... for the questions and my humble opinions.

    1) There are a lot of drivers out here, but "professional drivers" are few and far between. The folks you seem to be experiencing on the road is what we like to call "steering wheel holders". The professional drivers take pride in what they do and are courteous, among other quality traits. Steering wheel holders have none of those qualities and seem to put "self" over everything else.

This forum has a good mix of both. Some want to help, but some simply want to be critical of others and are never helpful.

    2) My first thought was maybe the ones who don't drive a consistent speed have some form of the Adaptive Cruise Control. What that does is it maintains the same following distance regardless of speed, up to the maximum speed you have your cruise control set on.

For example, the truck can cruise at 68 MPH and you see another truck in the distance. You catch him, but after a while, you realize you aren't gaining on him anymore. You then glance at your speedometer and notice you are only going 65 MPH. So you change lanes to get out from behind him. The truck will start to pick up speed again because nothing is in front of it, so it can get back to 68.

Soon, that same truck comes up on another truck and the same process begins again, but this time, you are the truck he passed earlier and the truck he caught is only doing 63. You pass both of them and he realizes you are the same he passed earlier, so once you are clear, he passes you again. The driver is simply not paying close enough attention to what he is doing or his mind is preoccupied with a podcast, a ballgame, etc.

Some drivers like to do it, just to show you they can.

    3) This one has been debated over and over again. Some say it's the passing truck's responsibility to make the pass, some say the professional thing to do is for the truck being passed to come off of the cruise for a second as it helps the passing truck make the pass.

For a long time, I was of the former opinion. If you get out to pass me, it's your responsibility to make the pass and I'm not gonna lift to save my life. In recent years, I've taken the latter opinion. Kicking it off of cruise for a few seconds doesn't take much effort, it helps the passer pass, and (assuming the passing truck gets back over) frees up the passing lane for even faster vehicles to make the pass.

When it comes to me passing another vehicle, (again, my truck has the forward radar, so I can see how fast the vehicle in front of me is going), my rule of thumb is if I can go 3 MPH faster than the vehicle in front of me, I will pass them (he is running 68 and I can run 71). If it's only 2 MPH difference, I get comfortable behind them. I also read the traffic in the passing lane. If there is no visible traffic in the left lane, I may give it a shot passing him with 2 MPH difference. On the other hand, if there is a bunch of traffic coming up, there is no sense in me trying to make the pass with 3 MPH difference. Let them go, then get around the other vehicle.

@G13Tomcat I gave it a shot. Did it meet your expectations?? LoL

    That’s why you’re the best!

Made it home safe, taking a couple days to address the family matters, then hopefully back on a truck with a fresh, hopefully better, mentor (if not, whatever it’s one week!)

I’m five days I logged over 1500 miles and over 40+ hrs of road time...I only need 40 more.

He gave me decent marks across the board, passed me on the pretrip, and wants me to work on my downshifting and maneuvers (of course).

Let’s hope it’s not too long of a wait, both health wise, and money wise!

What's worse. On a two lane highway. Pass this guy. Get into town. Speed limit 45. He passes you still doing 60. Then you gotta pass him again.

One time I came out of Tucumcari NM headed west. It's difficult picking up speed for a long ways when you're loaded there. Passed by a Volvo in the process. Then once I picked up speed, I was going faster than him. Kept behind him for over 20 miles. He was using his cruise control. He wouldn't push the gas pedal down on hills. A Volvo leaves about 10 % power out of the cruise. I know Volvo's. I got tired of fooling with him. I went to pass. What does he do? Hammers down on the gas pedal. Keeps his foot there. Keeps cutting me off from completing the pass and getting over into his lane. I know he's having to keep his foot on the pedal. He's just contentious. Didn't think why I was so slow way back coming out of Tucumcari. So we keep this up with him playing this game for a good 20 miles. Became a definite problem. I could only go 70, governed. I could hold that well. So finally after a traffic jam behind us. Him watching me slowly pull away from him on hills. But not enough to complete the pass. He still kept his foot hammered to the floor. Had a truck move between lanes blinking his lights and horn. Finally this guy gave up. Let his cruise take over. I just pulled away from him and moved over. Why he couldn't just keep driving with his cruise? He's an idiot! ... A ways down the road there was a good climb on a hill. I could see him back there over 3/4 mile. He was hoping to pass me. I had more power than him. I kept going up. Kept increasing distance between us. He couldn't catch me. Why he just had to do that? His ego... stupid... contentious.
I wouldn't normally contend like this. But that was extreme stupidity on his part. He never thought why I was not up to speed west of Tucumcari. He never considered that I had just gotten onto the freeway. Was trying to pick up speed. He just had to drive with his cruise control. Then push the gas pedal to the floor when being passed. I couldn't lolly gag all day long behind his cruise control. He could have at least pushed on the gas pedal when on a hill. Use that extra power for consideration of others rather than contentiousness. I had a delivery in Albuquerque to make on time.

Most of the time. I get a guy passing me slowly. I just slow down. Let him pass.
Rule number one to me is; Stay away from me. ... I don't run with groups of trucks. Sometimes get one or two following me. But I just plain try to keep everyone away from me. Much less stressful driving. Much safer too.

That’s actually how I try to drive when my mentor is sleeping: make cushions on all sides of me and stay away from everyone. Makes my life easier given my limited skill set and gives me lots of time to react to everyone else’s insanity!
