This.
I think an open minded PhD candidate should make this the subject of their doctoral thesis.
Is it fair to say that if the same resources spent to make these emission systems work were used strictly to make an engine more efficient, that fuel consumption could be reduced by 20%?
10%?
So, that means that there are 10% more trucks hauling fuel, 10% more resources used to produce these trucks, tires, etc.
Then, if one examines the environmental impact of the production of the emission components, the plastic def containers, the environmental cost of def production including trucks to haul it, plastic containers, def pumps, def tanks, increased landfill costs, etc.
I do not have the time, knowledge, or wherewithal to come up with answer, but I contend that the current emission systems may cause more damage to the environment than they purport to save.
Having said all that, I remember air quality in Los Angeles in the 70s. Despite the increase in traffic volume the air today is visibly much better, so the result of past emission standards has produced positive results, but I question if mandating emission standards versus concentrating on mileage produces any net improvement as it relates to diesel engines.
Example:
I ran the same route with the same weight every day going to our job with my 2016 F 350. After the delete I gained 4 mpg. That is the only empirical evidence I have, but it is real.
Also, the government ordered trucks and pickups without dpf for use by the fire crews in the BLM and Forest Service due to concerns about starting fires on off road use due to high exhaust and component temperatures. I often work in the same environment, so if it's good for the goose..........
My 2 cents.

P.S. MX’s suck.........Badmon, KB3MMX, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this. -
And my MX is terrible. 347k on it now and it’s had a valve adjustment done and one nox sensor replaced. I’d be happy to pm you my vin if you’d like to verify that. Then there’s the fuel mileage issue and the fact that it’s lighter than a Cat or Cummins. Those two facts combined put a fair amount of money in my pocket at the end of the year. I should just go get a different truck so that I can be 1000 pounds heavier like everyone else. I do hate having that extra money. It’s quite burdensome. -
Special Denatured Alcohol 4 190 proof. It was Nicotine and Methylene Blue
Dye dissolved in 190 proof ethanol. The alcohol lets the nicotine soak in and the blue dye shows where they sprayed the stuff, the Ethanol evaporates. That's why your brand always tastes the same, the nicotine level is artificially controlled. The dye is also a carcinogen.
Go Ahead, Light another one!KB3MMX, D.Tibbitt, BoxCarKidd and 2 others Thank this. -

The link in the very first post says PDI will pay over a million dollar penalty over the next two years.
I would consider that a crackdown. -
