Hi All,
I have a question for the experienced drivers out there. What is the safest and the legal way to make this right-hand merge as shown in the picture? Also if there is no traffic in what gear (10-speed transmission) would you make this turn with?

You would need to setup as far left in the turn lane as possible so that your trailer tires are almost on the left line as you approach the curve. * Watch for cars trying to dive in on your right side, don't give them too much room too early *
When you start to exit the turn you will need to occupy 2 lanes until you finish exiting the corner.
Watch your right tandems and left bumper for clearance and suicidal cars.
In a 10 speed, and with a clear intersection, I wouldn't be above 4th or 5th depending on load in the trailer.
Even then you will need time to react to the pedestrian watching Netflix on their phone that will walk out in front of you.Nathanos, meechyaboy, Just passing by and 1 other person Thank this. -
@Mike250rs So you avoid the curved merge lane all together? Am I right? Will 6 gear work? How about coming to complete stop? See I took my test yesterday and the examiner tricked me by telling me to take the merge to the right and I blindly followed only to hit the curb my one and only mistake and it failed me. I retesting tomorrow and I want to make sure I won't be tricked or make the same mistake again.

Will this work?

You have the right idea with the picture. Ideally, your entire vehicle will be hugging the left line by the time your where the red car is. Then hang it wide coming out of the turn so you don't bump the right curb.
The trailer tires will offtrack to the right as you make the turn. You will be hugging the left curb line with your steer tire and the right curb line with your tandems.
Your the one driving. If you want to make a complete stop, do it.
Take the turn slow and show that your in control of the vehicle. Swinging the cab around will just spill the examiner's coffee. That never ends well. -
I would rather avoid the right merge lane I think I can't clear the trailer there. My worry is that might fail me. Also, my preference is to come to a complete stop not sure if that would fail me. That is why I am looking for advice here.

Go down to 5th gear. Going slow will give you more time to watch for oncoming traffic, pedestrians and the position of your trailer.
Don’t know how tight this turn is, but you may have to take both traffic lanes to complete the turn and keep your wheels off the curb.
You have it right in the picture above.
Good luck. -
@SoCalRed I think taking the merge lane is a sure way to fail. So avoiding the merge lane is NOT GOING TO FAIL ME? Then I need to bring the speed down to around 10 mph to shift down to 5?

By the illustration it doesn't appear you would be able to stay in that right merge lane and keep the tandems off the curb. It's hard to say without seeing the live intersection. Tomorrow you might have a different tester or even the same one may not take you through that intersection.
DillonJ Thanks this. -
Ok before the turn stay in the right lane as close to the bike line as you can. From there if you can’t make the turn without going over the curb you have to take more the one lane with the tractor. Make sure your trailer stays close to the curb. As you are completing the turn tractor goes back in the merge lane, trailer never goes out of the merge lane. Then left turn signal on and merge into traffic.
If there’s oncoming traffic or pedestrians on the cross walk stop. If not do not stop or he may fail you.
I’ve been driving local for 8 years and if I have to take a road test today will probably fail. In the city you have to do whatever it takes not to hit something and the book goes out the window.
Wonder if the people that wright this rules ever drove a truck pulling 53 footer around town.
Should’ve ask the examiner or your instructor the legal way to take this turn.
Pretty sure Mike250rs got it right.meechyaboy, Capacity, TripleSix and 2 others Thank this.
