FMCSA Safety Score questions

I think the confusion is getting FMCSA confused with CVSA. The CVSA inspection is what one gets on the roadside and at weigh stations. An FMCSA inspection is the annual inspection that needs to be done on any commercial equipment that runs interstate commerce.

There are two 'reports' on the CVSA side. The carriers CSA score which has points based on the violation and length of time since violation. There is also a PSP report, that simply lists all driver violations and wrecks and there is no points assigned, it's just a report.

 

If you’re a company driver you won’t have a score. Only trucking companies have a safety rating.

I'm not sure if you are joking. No, don't do that. PSP ( the driver equivalent to a company's CSA score) is similar to your MVR. It lists problems you've had, not every time you have your oil changed or every time you've stopped for a stop sign. I think the OP is confusing the annual inspection required for trucks and some drivers call their DOT inspection with the actual inspection given by law enforcement officers at weigh stations and sometimes roadside. Those 2 "DOT inspections" are not the same and only the last one can even show up in your PSP score.

 

Your Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) lists tickets, accidents, and suspensions for your passenger car license and your CDL.

Your Personal Safety Report (PSP) lists violations, tickets, suspensions applied to your CDL. Ideally, it shows nothing. Entries are negatives. You want a zero score that comes from a brand new CDL or a perfect record.

 

Nobody's purfekt all of the time.

 

Only way to lower your carrier safety score is by getting CVSA inspection that are clear.
So weigh stations and roadside inspections are about it.

 

Clean inspections by a DOT officer will also show on your PSP... Not just the ones that contain a violation.
