I can see apu not be cost effective for large fleets that run trucks into the ground for 500k miles and 95% of all wrenching required during that time is covered under a warranty specially written for said large company.
But for an OO that takes pride in his ride and plans to keep a truck to well over 1M miles... Then an APU is Definetally the way to go.
