Does it say min and max oil level on the clear plastic thing and is there a rubber plug in the center?

stillwurkin Thanks this.

I'd say there grease filled then. I dont know a whole lot about them.
Intothesunset and kay_ray Thank this. -
It’s more likely you rode the brakes too much and they got hot and that’s the source of the stench.

I am confused. Are the hubs self contained, where there's no plastic cover to see oil level? Have you checked in between the wheels for oil stains? No mess underneath on axles? Having no hub oil is serious trouble ahead.

Well. If the hub goes dry. There's only 2 places for it to leak.
On the outside. To which you'll see oil splattering the rims.
On the inside. Grease soaked brakes.
In other words. Stick your head down inside that trailer and look at the brakes. Like a driver is supposed to do as part of their inspection process.
If you don't see any oil outside or inside. You're golden. And your probably smelling very hot brakes.
And while you're inside looking for grease. Check the brake gap between shoes and drums. Another thing you should be looking at anyways. If you see any gaps. Those brakes don't have working adjusters and need to be adjusted.
Out of adjustment brakes will also cause your brakes that still have a good adjustment to work harder. So they get hotter. And can release a smell.
There's a distinct smell difference between hot brakes and oiled brakes.

If there is no oil plug, they are grease packed, simple as that. many newer trailers are.

Hub no oil typically results in axle no wheel lol.
Bakerman, kay_ray, truckdriver31 and 5 others Thank this.
