I think that requirement to see your registration and insurance for all of your vehicles is for people transferring from another state. It kind of confused me at first too. Just checked and it says this about that : (New Residents who are surrendering an out-of-state driver license only)
But
I used my vehicle registration and insurance for my two forms to prove Texas residency because all the bills (water, cable, elec, etc are in the wife's name)
The gal at the DMV would only let me take the tanker endorsement test even though I was prepared to take them all except passenger vehicle. She told me I need my CDL before I could take any further endorsement tests. So... another #### visit to the burning hell that is the Fort Worth DMV.
I'm thinking about driving 45 minutes west to a smaller town like Weatherford or Mineral Wells and take the other tests there. The big city DMVs are a huge boot to the balls.
How well do the practice tests prepare you?

I need to get a TWIC card also and I've heard you can request the two background checks at the same time and you can get some sort of discount so I'm gonna try to do that in the next couple of weeks. I graduate CDL class in mid-December so there's still a little time but I want to get the ball rolling as soon as possible. First-things-first though, gotta get these permit tests out of the way!
Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it all!tscottme and Frank Burns Thank this. -

There is a mega center in the Eastchase/I30 area and you can put yourself inline for that location at this website: Get Inline Online
I've had success in getting in and out of there (Eastchase) fairly efficiently in the past. It's still a kick in the sack, but I've not spent near the time working it that way as compared to the others. I avoid the Wedgewood, Azle Ave. and Hurst locations like the plague.
As has been said, be sure you have everything you need before going. It sucks to spend the time waiting only to find out you need some stupid document to get it done. Good luck!Frank Burns and MYSTYKRACER Thank this. -
PASSED!!!
Sailed through all four tests! Got 100% on TX Sec 14 and Combination Vehicles. Missed one on Air Brakes and three on general knowledge though I think one of the questions was a trick question and I'd argue the suggested answer is not wholly correct. The question was:
"If your drive wheels are in a skid you should:
A. Let off the accelerator
B. Slightly increase acceleration
C. Let off the accelerator and counter steer"
I chose "A" but apparently the correct answer is "C"? I'd quibble that frankly, if the vehicle is still going straight and just skidding w/ no yaw either way there's no reason to counter steer and if you did that would likely make things worse.
At any rate, I passed and that's the important thing! Thanks for all the help here!
Btw, I got to the DPS office at about 7:45 and the place was already packed! I already had all of my forms printed out and filled in from on line so I just took a number and sat. I brought all of my materials w/ me so I could review while waiting and I think that did help having every thing fresh. Waited for about 90 minutes and finally got to show my documentation and do the tests. Finished up and hit the door going out at exactly 11 a.m. All-in-all not too bad and I do have to say all of the DPS staff I talked to was helpful and courteous.Frank Burns and War-Eagle Thank this. -
Which office did you go to? Time wise, that's about average for what I've encountered.
Congrats on passing! It is a great feeling to have cleared a hurdle!!Frank Burns Thanks this. -
As for that question, I ran into that on one of my online study sites. Only thing I can figure is they believe that if you are in a drive wheel skid you are more than likely also sliding one way or the other which would require counter steering.
I wish I would have taken note of the few questions I got that I felt came from left field. When reviewing my answers, sure enough those were the only ones I missed. -

Your first year will be a ongoing education in what you don\t yet know.
Texas aint half bad considering.
I just finished examining the area above Houston Ennis comes to mind.
Its been a education to me as how much has been eliminated and replaced in the name of profiteering margins.Frank Burns Thanks this.
