I'd consider changing the u-joint at the back of the transmission if its got high miles. Its already half apart.
Do the reman transmissions come with a shift tower and isolator bushing?

The remans come with everything but the shift tower, bellhousing and rear yoke. They do include alll new air valves and hoses.
I put on a new shift tower last year so this one is good to goOxbow, Rideandrepair and AModelCat Thank this. -
also, no wonder this truck would shutter when slipping the clutch, the flywheel was original, has the old cat part number on it stamped with feb of 2002 manufacture date. I have never been a fan of cutting flywheels or brakes. Makes them not handle the heat well and warp. Cheap insurance to just buy a new one imo. 600k miles on the truck

The Cat 7M-7456 is same as Loctite 609 retaining compound (green runny stuff same as used for ISX cam years). Permatex has something similar. I have used blue medium strength Loctite when didn't have any 609 on hand. Need some type of sealant thread holes go all the way thru the crank and will seep oil. Another thing to check over well while you have flywheel out is flywheel housing bolt torque. Might not be a bad idea to pull them out one @ a time and clean, apply thread sealant, and torque them. I have seen many broken, loose ones, and ruined flywheel housings. New flywheel housing from Cat for a C-12 around $3,000 these days. We have our flywheels resurfaced all the time. Max that can be removed from a Cat (most others as well) is 0.040". There is a visual undercut around outer diameter that serves as visual indicator (depth of groove is 0.031 +/- 0.008)

I use blue medium strength threadlocker on flywheel housing bolts to engine block, clutch bolts, and transmission to flywheel housing bolts. Pete should be able to get you the the Cat 7M-7456, but a Napa or Fastenal should be able to get Loctite 609 or the Permatex bearing mount compound.

Guide studs make life way easier.
spsauerland and Collie Thank this. -
Flywheel can only bolt up one way. Look at it and you will see bolt spacing is not same on one hole. I made up some T- bolts to handle the flywheel. Cut off heads off of old head bolts to make guide studs.
Art Vandelay, Rideandrepair, Collie and 1 other person Thank this. -
when i took the bellhousing off the trans, i could see the 2 bearings. I think they are called countershaft bearings. Anyhow, they both say made in china on them and dont say eaton.
I assume that whoever rebuilt the trans last wasnt an authroised eaton rebuilder? or does eaton use chinese bearings?Rideandrepair Thanks this.
