Went on my first two road rides in school this past weekend. I love it to say the least.
My shifting however, was pretty rough, to be expected as it was first time driving a manual transmission of any sorts.
Anyways, I grinded quiet a few gears, and clutches to neutral, tried to get it into 4th but didn’t push the shifter far enough so it didn’t go into gear and I stalled it out. The instructor laughed and said it happens to everyone on their first few rides. Well I ended up doing good upshifting, and I was flipping through the gears pretty good. I would say “1-2” in my head pretty quickly every time I was shifting.
My downshifting was atrocious to begin with. Sometimes I would forget to rev it and when I did rev it, I would underrev or go quiet a bit over 1500rpm. Already started getting better at that by the end of the ride.
One of my issues though is revving on the upshift and not revving on the downshift lol
And there were two times coming up to a red light and I’m down shifting and then bam, light turns green and I got flustered and didn’t know what to do lol so I would speed up without upshifting lol
Anyways just wanted to give a little input on how my first two rides went. I love driving tractor trailers and I don’t want to drive an automatic truck lol
First time shifting 10 speed

There are two RPM numbers you need to remember.
One is generally high horsepower point on a given engine, generically the RPM will be around 1550 its time to upshift. You apparently are getting that part down. The 1-2 chant is a good time keeper. I use profanity. (In my head ...)
Now the downshifting.
You are driving a non syncronized transmission. Your RPMs uphill will fall to about oh... 1250. Imaginary bottom number for sake of teaching you. You clutch in just enough to break powertrain, fall out of gear, stomp the hammer past 1600 and she should fall right into the next one down.
Don't scratch. If you did try the next gear below the one you scratched. Stay ahead of what your tractor is doing.
Its all good. Learning is the hardest part of everything.Tx Countryboy and TugHillRider Thank this. -
Practice. Practice. Practice. Before long it will be second nature.

Oh believe me I used profanity plenty of times, out loud lol. Instructor just laughed.
Getting the rpm right on the downshift was the toughest part for me. As I said, I kept under revving or over revving lol
I appreciate you input. -
One thing I didn’t do was a neutral stop so I was pretty happy about that.

Are you "goosing" the throttle to get the rpms up to downshift or rolling into it? Takes patience to not hurry, but rolling into the throttle and EASILY resting the shifter against the next gear, when you get the rpm to match you will feel it suck into gear.

Double-clutching...*shivers*. I was lucky enough to never be required to do that.
