That's usually because they only lay down a single layer (the paving industry calls it a "lift") of asphalt/bitumen on loosely packed gravel (it's cheaper). It's not built like a black top highway with many layers placed on a strong foundation of tightly packed and layered gravel.

Tons of good advice here. I would like to add this: keep your eyes open on your way to/from loads for all possible parking options on that route. Who knows how soon you'll be in that area looking for parking? TruckersPath and Google Maps are very helpful, as well.

Don’t be that idiot driver that runs out of hours and parks on the ramp. That is unless you enjoy getting rear ended or sideswiped at speed because someone hit the ramp a little bit too fast and you were just a little bit too far into the lane. Or if you enjoy late night/early morning wake up calls from Smokey.

Also, as someone who regularly delivers groceries to Walmart I’d suggest not being anywhere near their docks between the hours of Midnight and 2359 (not a typo). Meat/Produce delivers between 2200 and 0700, Frozen/Dairy delivers anywhere from 0900 to midnight and Dry Grocery goes pretty much anytime the store is receiving during the day (usually 0500 to 1800). Where in that window their freight shows up is pretty random and depends how they sequence the stops so you never know for sure when a delivery is coming in. And they WILL tow you if you block the docks. The store in Lexington NE has this problem all the time because one of the two designated truck parking areas are adjacent to the grocery side docks... which are directly across from a laundromat. I’ve seen folks “create” 7-8 extra spaces down from the end of the last legitimate spot and it never ends well.

Pick up a CAT Scale directory at a truck stop. A lot of those little truck stops have a CAT scale, and you can look them up on Google maps to check for truck parking.

The cenex truck stops up in the dakotas always have parking and 2 miles away the franchise stops are full, rest areas are best if you have your truck stocked but it really just depends on the area your in. Each section of the country has different gems.

You gotta love the regional based truck stops, like Kwik Trip in Minnesota or Wisconsin. They have good pizza lol

It’s really not. I was pretty surprised by how good it was when I got some. I think it’s a new item.

They have quick trip in Iowa too. It’s just quick star down there.

    FlaSwampRat Thanks this.
