I'm asking on behalf of a friend whose stuck in a 2005 Volvo.. The truck has 'idle off' and turns off the engine and consequently the AC. Is there anyway to disable this so the truck can remain running at idle?
Apparently there is an auto start where if the temperature increases passed a set limit the motor will start itself and cool the cab. I'm sure he can find the manual inside it and figure it out but if anyone has experience with this and could just jot it down so I could pass the info to him I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for your input guys.

We've been trying to figure this out as well. However, our shop foreman did figure out how to override it. If you have a trailer on, set the trailer brakes and leave the truck parking brake off. This allows the truck to stay running.
Our companies management(the owners) even went as far as to call Volvo and they haven't gotten an answer.
You would think they would make it an option. There are certain things in the menu that can be locked with a password. This should be one of them, but it isn't.phoenixAM Thanks this. -
Unfortunately that didn't do the trick. Poor guy only got a few hours of sleep due to the heat and is pretty upset obviously...

not all trucks/trailers allow this to happen.
also, volvo must have had a dummy working there they spoke with.
when the idle shutdown light comes up on the dash tap the fuel peddle, or the clutch ped and " overide " should appear under the message.
if this does not happen then the company your friend works for has it disabled in the trucks computer system, so no running the truck,
many companies down allow the ideling due to the extream cost od fuel x's xxx amount of trucks. = expesive.
if ur friend works for a decent company and allows SOME idle time, he should be able to hit a shop and have them enable the idleBaack Thanks this. -
You could also set the cruise at 1k

In 2001, I drove a Volvo for a month. If I remember correctly, to set the auto a/c feature on that, after you have parked and set the tractor brakes, you turn the cruise control on and hit accel, then hop or reach into the sleeper and hit the on button on the control pad back there. The unit in the sleeper berth, where you set the temperature, has an on/off tab, press that and it should take over.
Hope that is the correct procedure, been a long time ago. After that, I was mostly in Macks, and they had a slightly different procedure.
If this doesn't help, you can always go to the volvo trucks of North America, look for their parts & servie tab, and on-line manuals. You can download a pdf version of an owners manual. Need the model of the truck, such as vn or vhd and you said the year was a 2005.Last edited: Jul 9, 2009

Its not my friend working there. I said its the company I drive for.
Our company allows idle. All of the older Volvos idle just fine. its just the last few that were purchased.
The throttle/clutch tap only disables it for a short period of time. For down-time idle, it doesn't.
Our company doesn't lock anything down on the trucks. We aren't some major conglomerate, and the owners were drivers at one point, so they don't mind us idling the non-APU trucks.
The Volvo rep has been less than helpful. We have 5 trucks doing this right now. -
We have 2 '01's. I'll have to try that.
On the '08's there is a control for the sleeper system right by the wheel. I wonder if it would work through that as well. I'll play with it on Monday on both. -
its in the computer system...

Must be different than my 07 Volvo, all I have to do is turn on the cruise and hit the accel button to set the hi idle and that keeps it from going into idle shutdown. Somebody has something turned off in the computer it sounds like.
