I say get out while you still can, or don't start at all. I was a truck helper from 1993 until 1995(help unload baking ingredients of all types including 100lb bags of flour)into everything from supermarkets to basements in mom and pop bakeries in Brooklyn.Got my VDL drove for them for a while then quit, ended up at A.W.i.(Shur Fine) after a few other both local and OTR jobs. Two years(2004 to 2007 I worked for them, went for a random drug test as Ihave many times before, but this time just couldn't give them enough cause it was Aug 2007 hottest of the year and I been out on my day off and a bit dehydrated,so I was fired for refusing a random drug test.I was terminated. Now, according to the test administer I didn't give enough. I had for fact done so,I remembered the amount, because the place I work now, the ONLY one that would hire me cause I worked there before and they are a crap hole, when I took the drug tests for them, I gave that same amount on purpose and it turned out to be more then enough so the tester screwed me.No one would take the case blah blah blah I'm over it now.I had been wanting to quit for quite some time now.I am tired of the crap that comes with this job.The dispatcher who thinks I'm SuperTrucker to the jersey crap holes I am at everyday working 60 hours a week doing stupid runs starting in Paterson NJ and ending up in Newark DE.I am tired of the traffic.I am tired of driving.I am tired of the shippers/receivers who think I enjoy being out and sitting for 2 hours in a crappy little yard in my box on wheels.Just tired of the nonsense.I am tired of a company who lets drivers who are hangarounds(getting paid while hanging around the shop),Supertruckers(dispatchers who say "Well, John can do it"),and Clock suckers(drivers who sit out and get paid and screw the company).I am tire dof a company who has blatant very wasteful spending but yet cut drivers' pay 10 percent because of the "bad economy"

I am tired of federal regulations not looking out for the driver

October 5th 2009,I start school for Graphic Design and two years of that I AM OUT OF TRUCKING FOREVER!!!!!! I even plan to drop my CDL my next renewel after I get a job in my new field.I regret the day I ever got my CDL.

I suggest to all new drivers, rethink your decision and do not drive a truck. It sucks sleeping in a little box on wheels, and trying to find a place to park a 3 story building on wheels.

826 days from this post until I can quit forever!!!!!

If I spent so much time in NJ I would hate it also.
NJ hates Truck drivers and most of us hate NJ.
Good luck in your new job.

South Plainfield off of 287,I just stopped in a parking lot to run into a Taco Bell and some security runs up and says i cna't park there

    But I'm shopping?

    How much you spend?

It doesn't matter, I have a daycab,no sleeper,I'm not idling it and truck drivers are people to and therefore have to eat.

I will call the police if you don't move.

Go head,I guarantee I'll be gone and out on 287 before they even send the call out to a patrol car.

    and i was.

just wait! In the next 4 years, it's going to get much worse! EOBRs, stricter and more states with no idle laws, mexican truckers invading our country......This profession is screwed!
I wish you the best of luck in your new carrer! But I'll tell you this, I've been trying to escape from the truck since Dec. 1998. the longest I was out was 5 yrs (still didnt get very far out, I drove about once a week). I'm afraid that until all 4 of my kids are grown up, I wont be able to get out. Anymore these days when I think about the future, I get either really mad or extremely depressed! What's the point though, no one cares! it'll never change! I just hope my wife doesnt divorce me before I can get out of trucking

That's all part of my decision. many many reasons to quit. And the company I work for now,of course we got a pay cut, but still pick up/deliver the same amount of freight and I work the same hours and i am constantly asked to run over my logbook hours and I absolutly will not do it.I tell them that since the pay cut that is above my pay grade.I just can't do it.

I wholeheartedly sign the 'dont become a truck driver' side of this >.> We have too many people with expierence who cannot get jobs because they want to suck you students dry at 24 cpm.

Well if I had to run NJ everyday I'd be pissed off too. All trucking isn't that bad though. Sounds like you've just been doing it long enough too be completely fed up. It's definitely no walk in the park and not for everybody. I think everyone gets to a point where they have had enough but some of us just get over it and remember it's just a job and some just move on. Either way it's part of the job. Best of luck to you in your new career when you get to start it.
