Just wanted to share this terrible delivery I had, and I want to know what more experienced drivers would have done in my situation.
I was sent to grab a tcalled load from one of our yards and deliver it about 6 hours away. I had about 6 and a half hours on my clock, plus an extra 30 minutes in reserve if I took a 30 minute break.
I told dispatch from the get go that we would be cutting it close.
grabbed the trailer, first driver didn’t leave any BOL, scale tickets, etc. company emailed me the BOL first crisis avoided.
I get to the consignee with 10 minutes left. No ones there. There’s no guardhouse, no marked shipping office, just multiple buildings with several trailer lots.
I drove around the whole facility multiple times, finally found a yard dog. However, without a printed BOL he refused to help me.
Ended up sitting there on a 30 minute break. I tried calling their office, they were closed. I called my DM, and he had no idea what to do either.
I finally spoke to the night GM and he told me to “drop it.”
the yard dog threw me a bone and told me to go around the corner there should be 3 pam trailers there. Drop this one and take one of those.
I go around the entire facility, zero pam trailers.
In the entire yard, there were 2 open spaces, however they were so full of debris I didn’t feel safe dropping the trailer in them.
I was out of time, literally 1 minute left on my clock. I saw a regular 4 wheel vehicle lot that had a couple trailers parked in the corner. I took detailed notes on qualcomm, and dropped the trailer there.
I ended up requesting permission to PC to a safe location (as a bobtail). I was told I had two hours to find the nearest spot.
home was about an hour and. A half away, and there were three rest stops between here and there (no truck stops). Everything was full and backed up onto the ramps, so I went home.
did I do the right thing? I feel nervous that I’ll get into trouble, but the way I saw it I was either dropping the trailer or taking it with me!
Worst day ever!

Yup you did it right. Also unless I was pu king up load in that area. I would have went home even if spot was available in rest area.
Coffey, Rideandrepair and austinmike Thank this. -
I see no problem, either. would have done the same.
Rideandrepair and Tb0n3 Thank this. -
Thanks guys! I guess it just FEELS wrong dropping it in a car lot lol I’m a bit of a push over personality wise, I don’t like fighting or having to be the “bad guy” which is something I need to learn to deal with!

What you just described happens more often than not. You need to be prepared for any snaffu at any moment. The joys of being a truck driver. Be flexible, be thorough and always be careful.
