I actually applied to Erb recently and they told me drivers need to be able to driver manual transmissions. I'd say that's pretty good considering every mega across Canada is driving strictly automatics for the most part. Ended up not going with erb, even though I can drive manual. Maybe down the road I'll apply there again.

ERB took a month to get back to me about my application. They called me back when I was on boarding with a local company in Toronto so had to tell them I had a job already. After insurance fell through with the local company, I called ERB and asked them to reopen my application for the next hire date of April 1st but I haven't heard back from them :(

So im currently apart of the training program im doing the city training 3 other trainees just quit after some trainers said that we wont be making more then $3000 net per month after training is this in anyway accurate? The trainees mentioned that they have to pay a fine for breaking the contract. Should I stay here this would be my first trucking job so far so good the training just seems a bit excessive.

Pretty Accurate for all the training companies for the first 6 months. ($800 per week net)

Right now things are slow as hell, so could be tough to even make that. Or you could get on a busy fleet (Reefer) and make more.

the first 6 months to a year is always tough. After that the sky is the limit. No such thing as excessive training. The crashes on the road are out of control, and the accidents in truckstops are right behind them. Get all the backing practice you can!

I made around $3000 net at my other job not related to trucking at my other job working 40hrs per week so this is kind of sad to hear but it makes sense since I’m new. My buddies drive dump trucks and live bottoms I could enter that field but since winter was coming I thought going OTR would be best. So in conclusion you’re saying to just stick it out with challenger for the year and then take it from there right ? Income wise I could work two jobs to make roughly $4000 a month trucking mon-fri and my other job sat & sun

Dump truck is seasonal and weather dependant, I know guys who did it, most are back OTR now.

You legally cannot work 2 jobs trucking, as your second job needs to be logged as on duty time. My suggestion is to stay with Challenger like @Canadianhauler21 did for 1-2 years, and then either get a different job (he went local LTL) or find a fleet that makes more inside Challenger (prob reefer, eastern seaboard).

When I started at Bison, I was doing $600 per week on their short haul van fleet, I was able to get into the PACNW fleet and get LTL and Multitemp Reefer LTL loads into BC. My pay shot up to $1200-$1500/wk net. That actually pissed them off, so I was condemned to Walmart runs on Hwy 3, but could still do $1000/wk if I went around dispatch; and talked to the planners directly.

It’s all about effort, learning the lanes and pay package, while learning to manage your time effectively.

thanks for the response, I guess I will try to get into a different fleet after a couple months on my own or i’ll run team for the year to maximize income. The other guys leaving just made me question if I should stay or not. Thanks for the advice.

Do the year at challenger, the experience there is worth gold trust me. I did about a year total there and used it to land a LTL job at transplus in Mississauga. I'm out of the industry currently but still get emails on indeed from potential trucking companies almost every day. Are you in the GTA?

I left the industry completely, had to still finish up a bit of high school since I dropped out. Applied to a few colleges for heavy truck mechanic, gonna do that before getting back into the industry. Winter is coming in, I never really planned to drive the winter either way.

I still love driving, going to be out until March next year, before I get back in.
