Typically I get some back every quarter because we usually over purchase in Idaho. This last quarter though I had to pay a whopping 24 cents!

I remember figuring this out right after I got my own authority in the 80s. Prior to then I was leased to a company, and they did the filing and then back- charged us what we owed.
Anyway, at the time I was always looking for the cheapest fuel without taking into account the added state tax. At that time Wyoming was like 8 cents per gallon and Nebraska was maybe 27 cents. After it dawned on me that I would get credit for the excess tax paid in one state toward another I would carry the state fuel tax sheet with me and subtract that state's tax from the pump price in order to compare the actual price of fuel. It was often cheaper to buy the more expensive fuel in Nebraska than the cheaper Wyoming fuel, after subtracting the state fuel tax. -
