Your right speedy, now that I look at it, that was a ####ed up blanket statement I made.

 

That's true, I just wonder how many of those guys on the list were really contractors and actually just contractors on paper and were really Ugartes truck bosses for each entity, just sayin.

 

Actually McUzi, there is one thing I would like to point out, Fed Ex Ground does or did have regional safety managers, atleast when I was there they did, and they would address safety issues with contractors if necessary .

 

Which I would find to be likely true still, I meant more of a safety department that handles things like preventability rulings, randoms, camera/incident investigation, continued training etc. Those regional guys would likely only be getting involved over something severe that cost the company damage/loss claims on freight I'd think. But I could be wrong all together, just piecing things together as I observe another OpCo.

 

Oh ok, now that I can answer for the most part, mind you it's been over four years since I sold out and got out of there, at that time cameras were not implemented yet, only elds were so I dodged that bullet, randoms were handled by the linehaul coordinators at the terminal for both contractors and contractors drivers, pretty much a lottery system and I did have my fair share of those , now continued training was handled by the contractors, since I went through Progroup for workmans comp, I automatically had a membership with Nevada Motor Transport Association, their website had a wealth of safety info on it, so each month we would put together a packet of safety topics, and gives those to the drivers and have them sign for them, forgive my ignorance, but what exactly are preventability rulings? are you talking about disciplinary actions?

 

Determining whether something is going to be considered an accident or an incident, and if an accident whether it will be considered preventable or not.

 

At that time that was all Fed Ex, you could try to dispute the matter but Fed Ex determined what the result would be, one example was motorists complaint call ins, if the motorist had the equipment numbers, they could simply just call in a complaint, whether your driver really did something or not, it didn't matter, driver was automatically guilty, contractor automatically lost safely bonus, and contractor was expected to deal with the driver on it, incidents were usually the same result, loss of safety bonus, accidents if ruled non preventable resulted in no action taken, preventable accidents depending on the severity, resulted in loss of safety bonus, loss of tractor points (which were accumulated monthly at 1 point a month and used for run bidding purposes, which was later switched to a point a day after I left I believe) and possible disqualification of the driver (meaning Fed Ex basically fired them for you whether you wanted to or not) contractors could be subject to disqualification also, but it didn't mean loss of contract, you just wouldn't be able to drive anymore, cover your drivers ect.

 

Also on the preventable accident, if Fed Ex did determine that it didn't rate a driver DQ, at that point you yourself could take your own course of action and discipline the driver, verbal, write up, fire them, ect.

 

I got a tenner that says this is pretty much business as usual at every big company.

 

At least I witnessed it in many FedEx terminals years back. Nothing new was invented in SLC.
