Single Sideband (SSB)

don't waste your money if thats all you want it for most drivers don't even know what SSB is or how it works. Now if you wan to carry on some good conversations with folks that know a few things about radios then get a SSB radio and when you go thru towns get on lower side of 38 or lower side of 16 and call CQ CQ and see who answers. But first find out how to use the clarifier and how your radio works.

 

And that my friends is the truth!

If you want a good SSB radio then a new 2950DX or 2970DX is the only way to go. For $300 to $400 they can not be beat ( for a new radio any way) and you would have to step up to a full blown ham rig to beat it. Talk SSB a few times and you will love it. I have talked AROUND the world with a 20 watt radio on 27.385 LSB more than a few times.....and that aint no trucker story!

Try 27.385 LSB for U.S.A DX contacts and 27.555 USB for world wide contacts. and no you wont get busted by the FCC for talking on 27.555 as long as you have a clean good sounding radio.........no matter what the hams tell you! Go past that on the other hand and you are playing with fire.

 

I agree as long as you stay under 28.000 99% of the hams don't care what you do .....

SSB is one fine mode but takes a bit of getting use to .... you need to tune it in correctly.

i use it even on the 70CM ( 432 mhz band ) and it's hard to beat for range.

 

But why give a crap what the HAMS think you are doing? They aren't going to do anything.

 

OK maybe i don't understand what you said .....

i DON'T care what anyone does untill they do it in a band I have a license to use and they don't .......

If they are in the 27.405 - 27.999 mhz band that is between them and the FCC and not my problem ......

99.999% of the HAMS I know think my way .......
