It's all a question of how we were raised and life experiences along the way.....
Dad always made sure we had good quality canned goods on the shelf. On occasion we would get a treat and get to eat the stuff. Looking back I know it was a way to prep for potential tough times or emergencies and by the stuff being a "treat" would make for less push back from us kids.
So I was raised with no fear of canned goods. After you cut enough cots and berries to put up in mason jars you understand the process and it is no longer a problem. For me a Spam Sandwich was a good treat after working hard all morning in the yard and building an appetite, It also kept me from eating all the other lunch stuff in the house that was supposed to be for sack lunches during the week.
More recently I would get the cans of Chicken meat (the ones just a bit bigger than a tuna can) and stash those in the sleeper. In the middle of winter I would jazz up one of those big ramen bowls with some dried veggies and a can of chicken. Throw some hot water to it and you can have a real meal -- something between a soup and stew. Did one up in the drivers lounge at a previous place I was at. Had people paying me to make them up during that polar vortex crap 5 years or so ago. Day dispatch called up the evening guy and told him to bring in a case of soup and a dozen cans of chicken to Stock his shelf and restock my truck. He had his wife run some frozen veggies threw a dehydrator to complete his stash for hungry drivers and staff.
A former truck driver introduced me to the canned bread. Reminds me of my grandmothers spice cake. Is it on my shelf of rations now? No. Should it be? Probably, and now that I am reminded will most likely put it back in the ration rotation. Just one of those things to keep on the shelf like tomato paste, canned cranberry sauce, and canned green beans.RidgeRunner731, thelushlarry, FlaSwampRat and 1 other person Thank this. -

Dad would get pissed when I would eat the tomatoes I grew in the garden that way.... because then he wouldn't get enough in his salad or get stuck with the store bought ones.FlaSwampRat, Rocks and Tx Countryboy Thank this. -
