You’ll learn different ways, try use all them and grab which is better for you, I remember during the whole course being told to use the V on the legs as reference too, and it was hard for me, then this instructor came to me just a week before tests 1 day 1 shot (8-10 people for one truck only) and told me just focus & follow the trailer tires path (and surrondings, never fall in love by just looking tandems or the V on legs) while I was doing backing maneuvers, 3 years and still follow same tip.

I was completely inept at backing IMO, but I managed to pass. I was better at the 90 then the offset and even the straight line (I kept over correcting).joshlilou Thanks this. -

I recently attended CDL school and my biggest worry at first was the pre trip. I'm not a "car guy" and don't know alot about engines and breaks and suspensions. It ended up being the easiest part because we went over it everyday in the same exact way. There were only 3 of us so we would take turns doing it each day while the other 2 checked the person doing it. By the end of the 3rd week we all knew it well.
It was a 4 week class and we only spent 2 and half days in class, went to the DMV Wednesday afternoon for our permit test and we were in the truck Thursday. Lots of hands on and our instructor was great.Larocamaro and joshlilou Thank this.
