I cross scales in Ky daily and Indiana often at 14,600. In weighs me every time but after Ky got to know my rig and that I am allowed 14,600 I get the green light on Pre Pass every time.

It has a lot to do with the width of your steer tires also.
Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -

Most of the reason for a limited steer axle weight is because of each states highway and bridge maintenance. They want to make sure the weight distribution doesn’t poke holes in their highways, because they’ve made them just as thin/cheap as possible. Saving those tax payers dollars!!!
earnies2 and spsauerland Thank this. -
Don't make sense to me because then you have tri axles dump trucks that have 20,000 lb front ends. I know tri axles are not otr as much as you guys are though. Idk.
-
But they have float sized steers to spread the weight.
Id remount the 5th wheel back to cantilever the load, move the tanks and batteries back, or id sell the truck.
Your steer rating doesnt go by the leaf spring count, it goes by the tag in the center of the beam. A spicer i-75 for example is a 7500# beam no matter what you do to it. Beam thickness, kingpin diameter, knuckle, spindle and bearing size all must carry the load, not just leafs and shackles. I lost a front wheelbearing and hub one time. Thats a ride you dont want.
A truck that nose heavy is always getting stuck when trying to back up a wet or snowy incline. I had the jake completely stall the engine on me bobtailing downhill in the rain to an alignment shop last week. That was a surprise 50ft skid.earnies2 and daf105paccar Thank this. -

Yeah but not all tri axle dump trucks have floats.
