If you don't know the regulation, don't put info out there to confuse others. There are plenty of threads that deal with this on here.

Simply put, 11 hour driving relates to line 3 and line 3 only. After the required rest a driver is allowed 11 hours to drive within a 14 hour period. The 14 hour rule is counted as all time spent driving (line3), all time less than 10 hours off duty (line1), all time less than 8 hours sleeper berth (line 2) All time spent on duty not driving (line 4). Basically once you start your day (of course after your 10 hr break) you have 14 hours available to get your 11 hours of driving in. The only way to stop your 14 hour clock is to take a break of at least 8 hours sleeper. You can take up to a 9.75 hours sleeper. But if you do that take 15 more minutes and restart your 11 and 14 hours. Driver's get confused or get bad info like you posted and when I stop them they are shut down. The first thing out of their mouths are "But I thought.....". Please my job is hard enough trying to keep driver's straight on HOS don't put bad info out there.

What? If you are a driver of 20 years, and you don't understand hours on duty, driving, off duty, and sleeper by now?

Thanks, Boy a lot of different answers !!! Like I said I am ONLY a truck Owner. I have my truck leased to a company so thier safety department audits the drivers logs. However I get two different answers there too. That is why I am asking a Retried DOT Officer. I am just trying to help this driver spent his time wisely. I feel that since he mis understands the rule, he logs times that he could just flag. So as I understand it the 14 hour window is just like punching a time clock you have to do all your reguired work within that 14 hrs. You can drive 11 and all other activitives you do within that 14hrs counts towards your 14 hours. So the 15min for restroom, 30 for directions, etc, etc IF DONE during the 14 hr window COUNTS towards your 14 hrs NO MATTER what line you draw it on??? If this is true will it ALSO count towards your 70 NO MATTER WHAT line it is drawn on. My driver was taught that anything on line 1 or 2 during your 14 hr window Will Not count towards the 70 but will count towards the 14. Anything on 3 & 4 during the 14 hr window will count towards the 14 and 70. So he is not concerned with how much time he logs on line 1 & 2 as long he logs at least a 8 & 2 or 10. If he logs unnessary time during his 14 hrs won't it make his 70 hrs add up faster? To Many Questions not enough mind !!!!!!!!!

The 70 hour rule is counted by the time spent on line 3 and line 4 only. 14 hour is counted totally different than the 70 hour. Then you have to remember, if you get a 34 hour break (a continous 34 hours off duty, sleeper or combination of sleeper and off duty) you 70 hour restarts. Now I know no one can stay in a sleeper for 34 straight hours. But I have seen where some have taken 6 or 7 hours in sleeper then off duty for th rest of their 34 hour reset.

No wonder the industry is switching to paperless logs. If the government would make it simple then they would loose money.

Not directed at you dieselbear - I for one appreciate your input on these threads!!

34-hour resets always seemed a little excessive to me. I wonder how they arrived at that number?

Common sense tells me that, say, a 24-hour reset should be plenty of time to rest up. Then again, my common sense doesn't have any government-funded studies behind it.

I'm sure it took a lot of individuals with, M.D., PHD, and all kinds of other initials after their names to figure that out.
