Stay on them..... if they are the type of company that doesn't like answering the phone or providing you with information and help, do you really want to be at their mercy if there is a payroll problem or your truck breaks down? Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
Magnum has a pet policy, a rider policy, a good hometime policy and we do a fair amount of drop and hooks. But more live loads. However, it is all no touch freight. Pay is an issue you will need to take up with them. Not that it is a big issue discussing it with you, but if I told you one thing, and they told you something else, that could ultimately make for an uncomfortable moment for me. I will tell you that I am paying all of the bills and living rather comfortably.
Also, I hope you can understand that I really can't come right out with the customer names, but we haul engines, tractor parts, frozen meat, refrigerated foods, paint, hazmat, dairy, and a whole bunch more. Pretty much if it can be put in the back of a truck, we haul it, or are capable of doing so. THe sky is the limit. Live loads can be nice...... nap time

..i used to work for a used car dealer that i knew personally & am somewhat familiar with deposits, what the dealers/buyers rights are concerning deposits, & unfortunately for u deposits favor the seller, not the buyer.. unless u have it in writing what the terms of the deposit are & u meet those terms but back out of the deal he can keep that deposit check.. & u said financing was approved but he changed the truck model u were buying, so now it becomes a legal opinion because the specifics of the deposit weren't put in writing; now u will need the advice of a contract lawyer if he doesn't mail u that check like he stated.. oh & wait for the excuses he will give u why it hasn't been mailed yet; i would ask him to send it 'certified mail, return receipt requested', that way u'll both be protected if it is actually mailed like he said it would..
..good dealers honor their word & if they say they will give your deposit back they do, but the bad ones will know the legal loop holes & make u jump thru them to get it back, but generally the law is on their side, they don't have to give it back unless the specific terms of the deposit are in writing, verbal agreements are hard to prove in court & usually cost more in time & money than the amt. ur trying to get back.. u were very smart not to give him an additional $500 bcuz I'm sure this guy was going to end up giving u a truck u wouldn't want; it's the old bait & switch routine, then you would want out of the deal & he keeps the deposit, now a total of $1000.. if u would have given in to his request because u don't want to lose ur deposit, u end up buying a truck u really didn't want in the 1st place; disreputable dealers use this con to sell u a vehicle they want to get off their books & u never intended to buy.. oh & never ever send a dealer a check for any amount until the sale is final & u have that amount in ur acct, this would be the biggest mistake u can make before the sale is final..
..hope this works out for u though & u get your deposit back, if you do let us know, he may turn out to have some self respect & honor his word..
..If u don't get ur check i would call the state licensing board for dealers & brokers in that state & find out exactly where u stand in regards to ur deposit before u even talk to that guy again, then u will have it from the 'horses mouth' exactly what ur rights are concerning this deal & be able to quote them; dealers get nervous when buyers start to call a licensing board because they don't want state auditors calling them & asking questions about specific transactions; they are registered as complaints & they don't want their license put in future jeopardy.. -
The only reason I asked about money is because some places have offered me a decent amount (Crete offered me .39, but no pets) and Schneider offered me .33 (seems low). When I was OTR 2003-2005, I was making .38.mile. I don't know if that is bad by today's standards. I suppose my biggest concern is that if the wife and I do hit the road, I worry about the dreaded $100 paychecks. I definitely want consistent money!
I understand not wanting to mention customers, but, what about running lanes? For instance, I did a lot of Philly/Baltimore to Tennessee runs when I was OTR. Just wondered where the hot spots are and try to get a general idea of where I would be running.
As for work, I do have apps in with a lot of people, local and OTR. I am looking at LTL and OTR primarilly. Hauling mail paid me very well, but, in the end, has left me laid off with nothing to show for it (Thank God the wife covers the health insurance).
As for live loading, yes, I would nap. To maximize drive time, if the load took 4 hours to load, unless my paper is time stamped with an in and out time, I would just mark my log that I loaded for a half hour or hour. Everyone does that, right?
Anyhow, thank you for the information. I will definitely start bugging the crap out of these folks(I, unfortunately, have nothing better to do).

Good looking out, Scooter. I was thinking that the guy was about to dump a lemon on you, and Mack verified my feeling on it. Let's hope he has one decent bone in him and you get back the deposit.
I would buy a $40 digital recorder and start using it. I use a little GE unit for all business transactions that involve money, just in case. -

Appreciate the info and advice. Well put. Yeah, feeling pretty good about getting the money back, but you never know. I am pretty sure though that he realizes that I am not going to play games with him.
Besides, I know where he works, what he looks like, and what he drives..... he realizes that too...... tee hee hee
But thanks for the advice. I'll let ya'll know how it goes

39 cents for starting over is not a bad deal. Shame about the pet though. But you know, you could always drop the wife and pet off somewhere if you were going to have to "be seen".
As far as the logs go.... no one cheats logs.... we are fine, upstanding, honest drivers....... <wink>Last edited: Jul 24, 2009

Not trying to take up for them, but I hope you can see my point, be it Magnum or any other carrier. I wouldn't be offended if I were you.... put it behind you and go to the next carrier. But I am sorry that you felt slighted..... no one likes to be "short spoken".
Good luck though..... I'll be cheering for you!
