That was a reason, but the other big factor back then, you could build essentially a new truck,to your specs, save a ton of money, and you did not have to pay 12% federal excise tax on a glider, but you did on a new truck. When I bought my glider new from IH in 1984,it was purchased through the parts dept.,just like you were buying a filter. Went to title it in Md. after I built it,they wanted me to bring it to the DMV,have an inspection done, then get a special constructed vehicle title, baloney. Went up to a tag and title place in Lancaster,Pa., I had used before. Gave them my certificate of origin, that came with the glider, got tag and title in two days,no problem,no special built vehicle BS.
What year did glider kits start
