You may have to do a year at one of the farms.

How bad do you want it?

I tried the local gigs at first too but all required that year of experience. I like the company that I'm with (not one of the huge ones) but I don't want to be away from home this much. I'm sticking it out for a year and then I'm to greener pastures.

Werner was not that bad. If you enter it knowing its not going to be a cushy job that you get lead by the hand on. If you get a bad trainer SAY SOMETHING TO THE SDM in most cases they will find you another trainer.

I miss Werner. I'd go back in a heart beat. I even tried LEASING on to them thats how much I miss them.

I recently got my class A from a private school also. I've tried all the big companies and most of them wanted atleast 3 months experience or were at a hiring freeze. I was getting desperate after over 2 months of searching. I got "lucky" finding a local B job making a decent hourly wage and home every night. Keep trying, it's a tough market out there.

Seems like a lot of people that hire inexperienced drivers are now only accepting experienced, such as Schneider.

thanks to all. It appears the 2000 mile mark is a high number now. But being hung out in some hotel with no loads coming my way is a big concern too. Waiting out the unemployment checks is not an option. I am afraid the economy is so bad that this industry will not recover, or it will be a much watered down version of what it was before. Regardless of that its a step i must take, and I shall succeed because the fire that keeps me going is not wanting to become homeless. Heck I am going to enjoy the opportunity to join this industry in which professionalism and a caring brotherhood does rule the day.

2000 miles a week is easy. Unless you work for one of the larger companies. Keep your ear to the ground :D

I got 2200 miles this week. My week started at 6pm Monday...ended at 7pm today (Friday) And I'm home until late Sunday night.

I saw 3 Werners today in Domino, TX. Two had been sitting there since 3pm the day before. The third was pulling out, to go on vacation...without his load. He had gotten there at 6pm the day before.

Shipping told me their loads had not even been placed into the production line, at 9am this morning. He also stated Werner knew this, and sent the trucks anyway.

I just gotta LOL at this.

But to the Original Poster, I'm only a couple steps behind ya bud. I finally today found a local tech college with a CDL course. Price isn't too bad...it's $1400 for 5 weeks training, which includes all fees for medical exams, licensing, drug screen, books/materials, etc, etc. Everything's $1400..well...$1412.50 to be exact. haha! I'm going on Monday to start the process to see if I can get the bill footed through the WIA.

Not to mention, going that route, there's no contracts to sign to pay back $4,000-8,000 in training fees. Of course, if you DID go the private route, then I'm sure that's why there's a "hiring freeze". They don't wanna hire drivers that they wouldn't make whatever kickback they're getting from their school. 'course...that's just a guess, cuz I don't really know.

Maybe I should clarify. He was supposed to have a load taking him home for vacation. Instead he was leaving, empty.

Don't know if he had authorization, didn't ask.
