I've always gone with this, never had an issue.

    Right.
    Positives first, then negative.
The negative cable should be connected first to the good battery and then to a a solid ground of the disabled vehicle - such as the frame - so a stray spark won't cause an explosion from the battery.

Connecting the positive leads after the negative will probably always cause a big spark right at the battery. Those fumes can be deadly if they ignite and explode.

    Repeating:

What does your owners manual say about that?

    I had it happen once.

Luckily the battery was dry, no fluid left in it.
But the concussion left me deaf for several minutes, and I felt it badly.
If it had been full of electrolyte the outcome would have been much worse.

So what do we have? Risk an explosion or risk frying the computer.

    Flip a coin.

Or, risk either the computer or your life.

    Flip your coin.

You know, just a LITTLE common sense goes a long way.
With everything just said here, and you are still holding that position?
    Unreal.
