Positives first, then negative.
The negative cable should be connected first to the good battery and then to a a solid ground of the disabled vehicle - such as the frame - so a stray spark won't cause an explosion from the battery.
Connecting the positive leads after the negative will probably always cause a big spark right at the battery. Those fumes can be deadly if they ignite and explode.Last edited: Nov 30, 2019

I had it happen once.
Luckily the battery was dry, no fluid left in it.
But the concussion left me deaf for several minutes, and I felt it badly.
If it had been full of electrolyte the outcome would have been much worse. -
