Positive on dead battery first, positive on boosting battery second, negative on boosting battery 3rd and frame or engine block on the dead vehicle last.

And don't be one of those guys who just has to spark the leads together. Its a good way to take out an alternator diode.

To answer OP question: yes you can boost a car with your truck. 12 volt system to 12 volt system no problems. Its when you get into 24 volt boosting 12 volt and vice versa that you really need to watch how you connect the cables.

Safety glasses are a good thing to wear around batteries.

I was present at 2 occasions, full battery exploded in the face of colleagues.
    Of course, no safety glasses.

Flush/rinse face, eyes, clothes with lots and lots of water to flush away and dillute the acid.
Thank god both times my colleagues were OK.

Be carefull out there. And follow @daf105paccar advice: wear safety glasses when working with batteries.

Also be carefull not to spill the acid on your clothes. It may not look too bad at first, but after the first was you will see the results. The cloth disintegrates at the spots where the battery acid was spilled.

Of course clothes can easily be replaced. A pair of eyes, or a face, not so much.

    Yes, excellent advice!

I've had a battery blow up in my face once. It's like a bomb with flying shrapnel and fluid plus it about blows your ear drums out.

Bought a little jump box from the Harley dealer. Lots of guys use them to jump off their bikes and boats. Will jump a v8 engine off 3 times before it dies. Awesome little piece. I actually used it to jump off my semi once. It’s about the size of a smart phone, charges with a micro USB, but has the full size USB port in it, and the small jumper cables.
