if i recall, the wait staff, do not even get paid minimum wage. the tips are supposed to bring the wait staff up to the minimum wage, and if by day's end, they do not, then the restaurant makes up the difference.
as a porter, you either get paid minimum or above, as a result, the company does not have to add anything to bring you up to the minimum.
on a personal rule of mine, i do not tip anyone but a wait staff..no tip for my barber, my mailman, the grocery store cashier, the walmart deli person.....etc.
if i order a pizza to be delivered,. that person does get a tip, since he/she provided a service i ordered (much like the wait staff)..i'd not be the one ordering a porter, or a janitor, or fuel island desk clerk.
that is the job one applied for and agreed to the pay structure and benefits, hours working, etc.
it is best to not expect a tip, so you will not be disappointed when you do not get one.
as a professional truck driver (that i was) i never got a tip for a job well done. not too many jobs out there, get a tip.
all i can say is "do your job each shift, to the best of your ability, and when you do get a tip, good for you, but don't look for it. your work IS appreciated when we step into a clean shower room, but in the end, we know the porters are getting a wage, ABOVE minimum".

Tipping is something I generally avoid anyway. We live in a cruel world and that's all there is to it. I do feel bad though and do have compassion for the people who do the menial jobs. It just hit me, I'm one of them!
buddyd157 and homeskillet Thank this. -
Tried to feel you up??
I would not think that behavior would be tolerated by truck stop or other drivers.
Most like you are just trying to make a living.Badmon and homeskillet Thank this. -
It happens! The guy made sure no one was around. Lets just say he tried but didn't succeed!
homeskillet Thanks this. -
I already said that it wasn't expected to most of you that want to be hateful towards me for asking. I was told when I took the job that it made good tips and that is why I asked! I will state that I am sure a GOOD waitress makes more than I do each month. A porters job isn't only cleaning showers. We keep main bathrooms clean, sweep floor in store several times a day, clean trash in parking lot even bags of poop on the ground, empty trash cans in the lot & the store, clean drivers lounge, wash towels, etc. I just wanted to know because I was told otherwise. I think I will become a waitress. LOL
bigguns, Numb and homeskillet Thank this. -
but for someone at the job who told you..."the job makes good tips", was wrong to do so.
that should have never been said, but MAY have been said, to hire you cuz they needed the worker, and did what was needed to cajole you into it.
i was personally not trying to be hateful but it is what it is with a job (like yours) to be paid a fixed weekly pay.
good luck to you, that job can last for decades, if you want it, or until the truck stop closes up..... -
I always leave a couple bucks.
Dale thompson, Dino soar, Numb and 1 other person Thank this. -
Never even crossed my mind to tip the porter after being charged $14 for a shower.
Maybe I should on the free ones.
Def not trying to sound like a Richard but nowadays showers aren’t free anymore. -
Most drivers use points for showers that I deal with but yes, showers are expensive paying out of pocket. I wouldn't pay out of pocket for a shower.
-
If the shower is clean, I always leave a few dollars behind in appreciation.
When I pay for the shower, I do not tip. I would like to but I can’t afford $14 shower and tip on a routine.VIDEODROME, Numb, 70’Nova and 3 others Thank this.
