    49 CFR § 393.77 - Heaters.

    (6) Portable heaters. Portable heaters shall not be used in any space occupied by persons except the cargo space of motor vehicles which are being loaded or unloaded.

One good rule to follow is plugging in the block hater while the engine is still warm. I don't think over using it will do any harm. I am told that the block heater will burn out over time.

    roshea Thanks this.

I know I do, but all I did was quote the regulation as you requested. I doesn't matter if it is electric or liquid fuel or propane, no portable heaters allowed.

Actually I'm shopping for a new one because my ten year old one died last week.

I wonder if a heater is like a radar detector, mere possession is enough to be a violation?

Highly unlikely, the last thing a DOT officer would be concerned about would be if you had a space heater or not.
Unless you were a highly uncooperative individual, they might want to pull that card.

    alds Thanks this.
