Had an interesting day today. I drove from Eugene OR to Sparks NV. Timed it just right between storms, and there wasn't much snow since yesterday's storm was a warm one. Left at 3AM from Eugene and decided to roll the dice and take 58 over the mountains to 97. Not much snow, but icy as all get out and I got kind of squirrelly coming down the east side of the summit, but I kept it slow and stayed in control. 97 was a sheet of ice from Chemult down toward Klamath Falls. Finally got into the desert south of Alturas and noticed a small plane doing stunts over the desert. He dropped down to the deck and flew next to me a couple times waiving as he passed. Then he got kind of stupid. On about a 5 mile long straight away he came in from behind me and buzzed me just feet over my trailer. Then he came back around and did it from in front of me. I was kind of laughing, but also kind of hoping the guy wasn't screaming ALLAH AKBAR as he flew toward me. Then he just flew off.
The things we see on the road.
Strafed by an airplane

Badmon, Roberts450 and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -

I seem to think that is called buzzing, not strafing.
Maybe I'm wrong, but doesn't strafing involve bullets?
Needless to say, that pilot should be reported to someone. Police, FAA...
That is some pretty dangerous behavior.
It's good you were just a practice run.magoo68, homeskillet, PE_T and 4 others Thank this. -
I would assume the pilot did not understand there is wake turbulence off you and if he ran into that with the small plane it could have flipped him into the ground. The best you can do is pull over and stop when that pilot came down towards you. By stopping you keep the air around the plane somewhat stable when he gets to you.
The one encounter I had was with 4 apaches in deep fog on US 287 near Kit Carson one fine morning in Colorado. These warbirds followed me really closely in the fog. It was noisy I can tell you that. Eventually there was a break in the fog and they flew across my front in a diamond about 100 feet AGL. The fog did not exist for them, not with the all weather day night sensors in those longbows.
I understand there is quite a base to the west some distance and that was where they were out of.
Nevada has a couple of spots where the military would like to get low and fast. With those fighter jets going as fast as they were I am not concerned about the effects off my truck vs them. Its when you get into the tiny little pipers or cessnas that weigh maybe 1600 pounds is where there might be a problem.88 Alpha Thanks this. -

Only you never see them, we had a major forest near the bay in those days and if they were to get down low and hunt each other thats what they will do.
Every year in a airshow two A10s were detailed to give demonstrations and our airport were very small. Tiny. And they used a very small section of sky to show that they can point the gun at anyone anywhere in any situation. We have always liked what they have been able to do.
Fast foward out west. Target range? You see the rounds hit and tear up the area. Then the BRRRRTZ HMMMM. Just glad we have them and the bad guys don't
There is a base with airshows here in Arkansas (Jacksonville) and they bring in everything for show. The last time we saw the Arkansas F16s I think they were getting on in age. Dating back to the 70's era. I am glad we have them, but at some point with the new Russian Pak-57 Felons that are being produced, we are going to need to come up with something good.
I have not had too much military iron, the most of the action would be in places like Dyess on I-20 Or Mildenhall AFB and so on. But Dyess is the king with the B1's The ones that are combat loaded have about two miles to get off the runway with their burners and all. The much lighter ones come up and then blast the J truckstop with burners on doing rolls and manuvers etc.
Here is one example at Dyess. (Warned... its LOUD...)

You could have obliged him by ‘firing back’ with an engine ‘regen’ from your truck which would have sent puffs of hot air directly into his path. The resulting down draft would have caused him to plunge into the ground creating a huge fireball, therefore blasting charred body parts from all directions from the wreckage.
“Mommy, why is there a crispy looking man’s head wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat in that Joshua Tree?”
Geez, the things kids say......
Great fun!Last edited: Dec 21, 2019
