Very true, but by having a known good tire.. one can avoid the overpriced mystery tire that gets brought out.

    That is my point.

I want to carry a spare so that I can avoid a 75 to a $100 Road call and all they have in stock is a five or six hundred dollar tire.

If can get a spare on to the truck and get home, that is much more cost-effective

Even if I was in a place that was unsafe and I had to call for road service, I would let them change the tire and when I get home I can deal with getting another tire.

    Cabinover101 Thanks this.

You can carry an unmounted spare, and have it switched out, but to try and get those lugnuts off in the freezing rain, probably not worth the trouble. I've seen videos of guys changing the tire with the rim still on the truck, okay if it's an outside, but it's always the inside for some reason.

Like I said, if conditions are bad I I would just pay for road service to come out, but I would not have to spend an unknown amount of money for an unknown new tire.

You pay someone to carry tire to you when you need one or more.

And if the spare you carry doesn't match pretty close to the one next to it you could tear up both. You may start off with the spare a close match but as the others wear things change.
I ran my own truck for 9 years and in that time I had one tire blow on my truck. Course I was pretty anal about my tires, air pressure in particular. If you start with good tires and keep up with them your chances of blowout are lessen considerably.

My 1/2" drive Milwaukee fuel removes lugnuts, no problem. When I have the torque rechecked, it's always good (probably over torqued). Air tools are becoming a thing of the past.

For me the idea have you spare is purely to get me home. At that point either the bed tire has to be fixed or replaced.

Is that true that if your tires are not the same height that you'll destroy both tires?

It’s true. 5/32” is the general rule of thumb. You don’t want one tire taller than the other one. The lower tire will skip and develop tire wear problems. A mechanic once showed me what happens when the tire height is mismatched. Well, the tire was completely bald all around.
