I hear different schools of thought and I'm confused. Can a felon obtain there hazmat? I know one with his TWIC card but I'm curious about the hazmat

It depends on the kind of felony. Usually the ones that won’t let you get hazmats are vehicular manslaughter, smuggling, serious stuff like that.

I'm a felon and I have my hazmat. When you go for that, they'll ask a few questions. If you can honestly say no to the 5 or 6 questions, then no problem.

Do remember tho, you'll have to get fingerprinted and and a background before taking the test. That should be done at least a month before scheduling the test.

If you go for your twic, you have to answer the same questions and get fingerprinted again. Nothing like having to pay twice eh.

FMCSA maintains a small list of disqualifying crimes. Homicide with CMV would come to mind. Or running drugs in a CMV etc. If your crime is not on that list then don't worry about it. The biggie is theft. Im not talking swiping 10.00 or a pack of gum kind of theft but actual big time theft stuff. If that crime is that catagory you will find no one will trust you with a big rig and loads. But I would not worry about it because these days our Govt has gone wild and make even some of the smallest trivial stuff a felony.

A list of the excluding charges was posted in this thread. It’s very specific and cut/dry. There is no “case-by-case review.” Either qualify or you don’t. If your charge is not on the list, then you are good to go.
