    Hi all,

I will be finishing CDL school in the next week or two and was hoping some of the more knowledgeable folks here could shed some light on these two different options that Schneider offers. I'm in Chicago and a Schneider recruiter came to our school to talk with us. He made both sound amazing (as I know recruiters always do) and was throwing around figures like 70 to 80 thousand a year. After he left the consensus among the more knowledgeable students was, "Tanker pays a little better, Intermodal gets you home a little more, period." I'm wondering, besides anything folks here can volunteer, if it really is just as simple as that? I'm gravitating towards tanker due to the specialty nature of it along with the increased pay and responsibility.

I don't have to be home every night, but was wondering what's the most a tanker driver can realistically get home? Is it just once a week for the 34 hour reset thing? How possible would it be to get home to Chicago a few times a week?

How does the pay compare between these two options? If Intermodal gets you home every night, and trucking pays by the mile, it seems like it would be hard to rack up very many miles doing Intermodal.

What pay can someone reasonably expect to be making with either one of these options at Schneider? Say at the start, six months in, a year in, two years in, etc. The recruiter and Schneider website both talk about, "Up to $70,000 a year," but we all know you can pay some poor soul $25,000 a year and that guy is still technically making "up to" $70,000.

Finally, and this is not so much a Schneider question but more of a Chicago question, I've read here and heard from others that there a tons of places in a big city like Chicago that will hire inexperienced drivers right out school and are better to work for than one of the big carriers, but it all seems so bewildering. What's your opinion on the best career path for someone in my circumstances? Some say start at Schneider, learn the craft and then find somewhere better. Some say find a different place right from the start that hires inexperienced drivers. But then I see people who have worked at Schneider for many years and seem to be happy and satisfied. So hard to know what's the best road to travel down.

Thanks so much for any help or advice the experts here can provide!

Schneider tanker is a good place to get started for a future lucrative career in tankers.
FFE (Frozen Food Express) has a terminal in Chicago and hires new graduates. One driver that posts on here makes $80K+ with FFE running teams on the "plasma account" and you must specifically ask to be put on that account. Each member of the team is making $80K+ and that's accomplished by taking advantage of all the accessorial pays involved with refrigerated trucking.

Many companies hire new cdl school grads. even though the website may have "experience required", so if you see something you like, apply anyway. Do the online app. then call to follow up on your application.

    Go tanker.

Schneider has a good rep as far as training for tanker.

I got my start in 1995 at a mom-n-pop food grade tanker outfit in Baltimore MD.

I would think that similar outfits are around Chicago if you look for them.

Still, you could do worse than Schneider.

I've never done intermodal, nor would I want to, based on what I've heard about it.

But trucking has a "flavor for every taste", and I'm sure someone is running cans for Schneider outta Chicago and makin' the crazy money.....:p

Tanker all the way, Being in Chicagoland you'll see home often, Stick to it and keep clean for a year and there's plenty of places around here to move on to.

I'd go tanker. I don't know anything about Chicago.
If you decide to move to another company a couple of years of tanker work,,,and a squeaky clean record... will look good on your resume.

Thank you all very much for your responses; lots of good info so far! Does anyone know what's the closest Schneider tanker depot(s) to Chicago? I saw a listing for a job at one in Joliet and was wondering if that's the closest to the north side of Chicago? Thanks!
