For commerical work the Aisin 6 speed auto is the way to go and don't think I would trust any of the 10 speed stuff yet. I'm a manual trans guy myself but there is a reason they de-rate the Cummins motor with the manual transmission and only offer the high output engine setting with the Aisin. Doing serious work with little truck manuals is not all that fun anyway since reverse is usually not geared properly to back a trailer up with. (It's too fast)

As an owner and/or previous owner of all three of the big three diesel pickups I don’t where to start. The Cummins with a CP3 is probably the most reliable engine out there but the whole Ram thing ruined it. The 6.7 Powerstroke runs like a bat out of hell but my first one had turbo issues. Went through three turbos in 150,000 miles. The Duramax/Allison combo is legit and maybe the hardest pulling of the bunch. I haven’t had any problems from them but I’d advoid the CP4 generation if possible. For me the sweet spot is Ford for now. Quality built truck with a good motor (6.7) and transmission that rides well and holds up outside of the lemon I had previously. Next would be Duramax/Chevy and then Ram/Cummins bringing up the rear. Until Ram can build a truck and a transmission I wouldn’t even consider them again.

We have a 2016 F550 work truck that has low miles on it for being 2 years old, 6300 or so. Already at the dealer for a defective DEF heater, which the dealer said it was a power steering calibration error....I've never seen a check engine light thrown for a steering problem lol.
It idles a lot but when driven it's almost always in tow/haul mode to keep the rpms up and the exhaust hot. I've only had to do one manual Regen when it called for it, I've been running hotshots in it and it only does a soft Regen from time to time on the job site. -
What I was trying to get to, is that another locked up motor in 60k miles is really odd. I've never seen a 6.7 have those kinda issues. A friend has a 6.0 f350 but he's done headstuds and a coolant filter, all the little fixes and his truck runs phenomenal with 300k on it.

Ford by far makes the best truck for a while now but they suffered so many engine issues over the years. Granted I'm running a F350 6.0 now because I'd rather deal with that than the newer DPF crap but even my stock 6.0 pulls like a mofo. (mostly stock no tunes 270k miles new KDD heads, studs, new stock turbo and 4" exhaust)
Duramax scared me due to the injector issues.. My dad has a LB7 and he's put multiple sets of injectors in it. -
Honestly I'd love a newer truck under warranty, but unless you lease it from enterprise that warranty will soon fall out and then you still have a truck payment "and" repair bills.. So instead I'll run my $5k truck that I put $5k into.. well probably 6 or 7 now because just dropped $800 on 2 tires but that's wear stuff.. I have a spare 6.0 in a van I can steal the bottom end from with my new heads if I need to.. So my only major worries are trans & rear end..
I wouldn't suggest a older truck or even a 6.0 to everyone, but if you can work on stuff and don't mind yelling at your truck and understand you can't run it fully loaded 80mph all the time it's a ok option so long as you fix stuff before it becomes a problem and stay on top of it.
Personally I'm planning to most likely buy a 08-10 F550 with a blown 6.4 at some point an drop a cummins in it.. I have looked at the F650's that you can find with Cat's and Cummins but I'm uncertain how those do long haul. My guess is very bad MPG..Last edited: Feb 11, 2020
