Inframe vs. crate/rebuilt motor

It all depends on what you need. I agree, might as well replace a few things, if they’re needed. I just had my 12.7 done. 18 k, total. Kit, head, injectors, counterbores, and Labor. Would have been $10 k.

I myself, would rather have an inframe. It’s less money, and can be a better build,A “ factory” reman sounds good, but You still have a rebuilt engine. The only advantage I see, is warranty, if that’s a concern. Since both my Detroit’s blew turbos, at 350k, and needed inframes at 825,last one also blew a head gasket at 550k, and a good inframe on my current 12.7 lasted 1.3 mil. Go figure. Never know what you’re going to get on a “ factory” reman. I personally don’t think it’s worth the extra money. Rather keep what I have , if it’s still good, and do an inframe.

This is what made me think it would be easier to just drop a motor in it rather than inframe it. From the sounds of it, its not as simple as it would seem!?

That looks tempting. The $20 worth of paint really makes it look good. If you knew it had a recent OH, not bad. But for $7-10 k more, You’ll have a new engine. The labor spent on installing a used engine is a waste of money. Unless it’s the only choice, because of lack of funds. It will still cost more in the next 3-5 yrs. If not much sooner.
