Thank you all for your replies, I have so many questions, but I will just ask one at a time. I have noticed that Illinois has the highest rate for apportioned plates in the entire US Can I transfer my app plate and register it in another State if I have a address in that state? The problem is I have 2 trucks I have had the worst year, out of the 6 years in trucking long story short, I don't have the money to renew Because Illinois is just so expensive, I do have my Mom who lives in Indiana I would like to transfer my apportion plates to there, since they are so much cheaper. I am hoping this is something I can do?

Your best bet at this point would be to contact your state trucking association. While some might not agree, go to the OOIDA web site and look at the educational materials. For $25, you can become a member and get a lot of help.

The cost of apportioned plates has nothing to do with what state you reside in. You track mileage and pay each state their portion of the miles ran. All your local irp office does is collect the fees and distribute them to the other jurisdictions so we no longer have to deal with each jurisdiction independently, like in the days of bingo stamps on your cab card.

BUT...your 'apportion' sounds like it will be 99% IL and the basic minimum amount to the other two states so your cost will be MOST of the Illinois fee plus a few bucks for IN and WI...The renewal fees are based on the mileage by state that you report. Even if IN starts out being less base cost, after the first year when you report 90,000 miles in IL and only 150 miles in IN and 150 miles in WI your cost will be, mostly, the cost of the IL base registration price...

Now that the IRP issues new units with all the states and provinces on the cab card [registration] you do not need to estimate your first year's mileage like you used to have to do.

When it was that way, NJ would tell you to put 10000 miles in NJ and gave you a sheet of miles across the other states to use as your estimates. This got NJ to receive the bulk of the first registration an paid the minimums to the other states. It was a money grab.

The change over virtually eliminated having to obtain a trip IRP to go through a state you didn't add +/or the expense of going back to DMV to 'adjust' the states on your initial cab card...

IFTA sticker covers you everywhere, now the IRP does too which has greatly reduced Transceiver and J J Keller's profits from all those temporary permits and I'll bet the DMV does not miss the busy work of adding additional states. IRP wise now is the 'best of times' compared to the original animal.

I know that NJ demands proof of residence to open a IFTA or IRP account in NJ so unless you are paying Mom's utility bills [in your name] it will be hard to set up in IN if they demand proof, and I think they will..
