Many schools and DMV testers claim that double clutching is the right way to teach new drivers. But the small amount of peddle press
that you use on the second press isnt enough to do anything. Its in the free play on most clutches. But some officials will dock you if they see you not double clutching. I dont do it and dont want to start. Whats wrong with that? Its rpm that meshes gears. The clutch just gets you in neutral. any comments???...... especially by instructors???

just roll with it till your on your own. the do it the proper way.

don't ask my why double clutching is a necessity. cuz it's an unused practice.

this is the 21st century. not 1950.

Why are you worried about double clutching if you have been a trucker for a year? I didn't get docked on any tests for floating unless I missed a gear or the tester heard the growl during a spilt (starts growling immediately if you don't let off right after you flick the splitter.) If your going to school or something just double clutch and if you have to do it for a road test do it and get it over with. If we always got what we wanted my truck wouldn't be tan it'd be black, it wouldn't have stock 5" exhaust with mufflers it'd have dynaflex 10s from the y pipe back, and I wouldn't have 60 some LEDs I'd have 120 LEDs. But we don't always get what we want unfortunately...but #### it'd be nice.

I think it is easier on the transmission, when a mistake is made. BTW, you don't need the clutch to get it out of gear. Apply some pressure to the shifter in the direction of the next gear, let off the throttle, then unless you over rev it, it will go right into neutral.

The best I can figure out is that all double clutching does is to teach you the timing for the rpm drop while shifting....when floating you pull it out of gear, pause a bit in neutral then pull it into the next gear.

Im certain that if i had to take another road test id have trouble from being set in my ways even after having worked at this for 30 years.

The guy I tested with make a comment about me floating, I said it was my truck, he said as long as I could do it he didn't care. After the drive test he said I ground a little on one shift, I didn't feel it in my hand but the rest of the drive was clean so I wasn't going to fight with him about one little thing. I just wanted to get my paper and get out of there.

I do have a neighbor, older guy, who was a Swift driver for a few years when ranching got tough, who learned the school way and thinks I'm some kind of pervert for not double clutching. I do look up to the guy for most things, just not shifting. I took him with me on a load of hay once and after a long downgrade, on a corner, coming up on a turn, where I jaked and floated down through the gears, he just said "That's a nice piece of shifting". He probably still double clutches, but hopefully he doesn't hate me anymore for floating.

Our examiners here in Georgia are the same way. I had to double clutch or be marked wrong. I have been told time and time again to just wait until I'm on my own. I don't know why it's like this but oh well.

My dad still double clutches after 33 years of driving. No idea why but he's set in his ways.

DING DING DING. We have a winner.

Nobody is perfect. You can float 1,000,000 times, but all it takes is one mistake.

That is what the transmission shop told me when I asked if he could tell why my driver took the trans out on his 2nd week on the job.

Only when the double clutching was unsuccessful. If it's grinding then it's still being floated. It will go into gear smooth when there is a mismatch by double clutching but double clutching isn't as easy as it sounds. There is definitely a 'feel' to develop for it.

Mmm, you can do it quickly but you can't rush it.
