    Qualification and disqualification of drivers

    §391.11 General qualifications of drivers. (a) A person shall not drive a commercial motor vehicle unless he/she is qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle. Except as provided in §391.63, a motor carrier shall not require or permit a person to drive a commercial motor vehicle unless that person is qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle.
    (b) Except as provided in subpart G of this part, a person is qualified to drive a motor vehicle if he/she'
    (b) (1) Is at least 21 years old;

    Did this rule (b) (1) change very recently? Or is Commiefornia that different from the rest of the country?

    What school is going to let you blow your money on something you can't have for another 3 years? Much less trying to get the A and X endorsement! They are going to rob you silly unless I've been out of contact that long!
    I want you to call local companies and a few OTR and ask them if you qualify for a driving job at 18! NOT a freaking driving mill! You'll be lucky if you sit in a truck before you're 23 with all the out of work drivers out there now!

    YOUNGSTER Thanks this.

    yes i am allowed to have cdl in california at the age of 18. I understand what your saying about getting a job at a young age due to the economy and insurance reasons, but its not what you know but who you know and i have people i know that are going to get me in.

    Class A at 18 ok. Must be 21 to cross state lines. Intrastate vs Interstate rules. On 1st cup of coffee or I'd look it up for ya. Kommifonia is big enough (and slow enough) to drive some decent distance without crossing state lines.

    Even though you can Drive a CMV at 18 in Cal,your biggest Obstacle is the Carriers Insurance Policy.

    It is totally legal for a 18 year old in CA to get his/or her CDL. WHats the crap about, he did not ask anything offensive, nor was he a jerk which is far more than I can say for some of the posters here.

    I got my son to take and pass his cdl here in ca when he was 19, you can not get Hazmat or I believe passenger. And yes unlike Washington CA has plenty of real estate he can drive in.840 tall and 200+ wide. As far as insurance well thats a problem for the truck owner.
