Depends on how dangerous it is and if I will need to change my route or not to accommodate. I norm got paid .05/mile more but if its something major then tons more.

What major hazmat have you hauled if you don't mind me asking?
-
Not much "Major".
I hauled a lot of flammable 3, (always roofing glue at TMC, not that bad) ...the rest all varied, never the same thing twice. Mostly stuff that's not bad, but some corrosive, highly flammable, inhalation hazard, toxic once...never explosives or radioactive. Personaly i dont like hazmat unless it pays well enough with little inconvenience. When I was with landstar I picked the loads and could negotiate. If I had to run more miles do to hazmat restricted loads I'd need more then .05 more. At TMC as a company driver we made $35 extra / load. I've hauled methanol a few times and that is dangerous stuff. I wouldn't need to make as much carrying photo solution to fugi film as i would methanol to a manufacturing plant. -
Standard charge is $150 for Class 2, 3, 4. Higher than that, and it depends what it is.

How long does it take for the Hazmat fingerprints and background check to take and get a notification so I can go to DMV and take the test?
-
Not sure, but while you're at it bite the bullet and go get your TWIC and TSA as well. Don't let there be a limit on where and when you can pick up or deliver loads. The Hazmat background check and fingerprints qualify for your TSA stuff as well, which allows you to pick up time critical air freight (i.e. better rates.)

each state does it THEIR way.... in TN. you have to take the hasmat test and after you pass THEN they send you to get the background done

Wow, i've been getting ripped off then.
