Can one get a permit to deadhead a used truck, purchased in another state, to the state where it will eventually be set up? I'm considering buying a truck but it's all the way across the country! Lots of states to drive through!

Thank you so much for the information. 1 last question if you know the answer... The companies you mentioned that will set all this up for you.. do you know what they are called? As in i need to know what TYPE of company they are so i can research for one in my area. Thanks again you are a big help.

You are only able to estimate for your initial year. The second year you report your actual miles and any states you didn't go to will be dropped. If you want to keep them they first apportion your actual miles across the actual states and then add the minimum charge for each of the dropped states and add it on top of your renewal cost.
If you don't go thru all 48, you are supposed to let them drop off and then get trip permits which gives you mileage to report for the next year and that puts the state back on your next cab card.
Multiple trucks get set up in 'fleets'. I used to do 8 states on my day cabs and 30 some on my sleepers. As long as one unit in the 'fleet' visits each state on the cab card, the states stay on all the cab cards in that fleet.
I also knew an owner operator who kept no records and would fib his mileage for the whole 48. The next year renewal would show the numbers from last year. He would just add or subtract a few digits and always left them as odd numbers. He was not audited when I knew him BUT some states do audit your IRP and IFTA so your mileage may vary!

Does it matter what state is your "home" state for your baseplate??? In other words, is one state better than the next one???
